I drew and released but immediately saw my arrow going low. I knew it wasn’t a good hit and when I watched the herd of 35 run off…
Hunting Stories
We love hearing a good hunting story almost as much as we love hunting ourselves.
The closer we get the more we know this is a special bear. This is a bear I am proud to have and I will never lose the memory. I give thanks for being allowed to take such a fine animal.
I timed my shot for when my wandering pins crossed his vitals and squeezed off only to watch my arrow fly harmlessly over his back and the bull of a lifetime disappear over the ridge and out of my life….
A small private zoo in southwestern Virginia is under investigation by federal authorities after two rare bears escaped and were shot by locals.
I knew for a fact that at any moment I would either spot a huge lump of brown bear all piled up in the stream, or possibly a speeding mass of teeth and claws would explode out of the alders. I preferred the former.
Three or four elk hunting seasons ago, I guided Dave Brucken and Dr. Rance Gamblin on an Idaho archery elk hunt. Dave works for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and wrote a story about our little adventure that was later published in their Bugle Magazine. He and I have stayed in touch and he has given me permission to post his story here. Enjoy.
I’d like to say that it ended with a hero shot of me and my bow and a big bear named Toad… but it didn’t. It did end with a BANG! though.
While I was going to college in Tempe, Arizona, I applied for every hunt that I could. I drew an archery tag and the ex drew a premium late mule deer tag on the Arizona Strip unit 13B… go figure. Like they say, life isn’t fair.
Overall the hunt was amazing, and we would do it again in a heartbeat with the same outfitter. We made some great new friends and a million memories plus filled the freezer.
An unguided drop hunt for moose has always been a dream of mine. The thought of being on your own to hunt moose in Alaska… does it get any better?
I hardly ever draw tags, but this season, all that changed. I drew a coveted spring black bear tag in Idaho that I’ve been applying for since I was twelve years old!
Cory Glauner and Brandon Couchman head to Washington state to hunt over-sized black bears.
By the time the hunt was over, we ended up with a bunch of big rattlesnakes and each of us got two javelinas. It was a great trip, and it was nice to get to know Mike better.
After a long season of guiding hunts, Cory Glauner shoots a small bear with his bow, and makes it a family event.
At 20-25 yards I could finally see the bruin clearly, mouth open, teeth exposed,…. Otto yelled, “Shooooootttt” and I shouldered my 7mag and…
Once I had her loaded up to go back to camp to take her out I found myself asking whose prayers had been answered mine or those 3 elk?
Never have I had such a physically demanding hunt in such a magnificent place. I truly hope everyone may have the opportunity to taste mountain goat backstrap (sautéed in butter with a little Himalayan sea salt) in their lifetime. Delicious.
One of my hardest hunts testing us physically and mentally every day pushing us to are limits. We experienced so many crazy situations that would’ve broke anybody down but with hard work, dedication and support all three of us came out successful!
I was lucky enough to hunt black bears this past May with a great outfitter just west of Edmonton, Alberta. I haven’t hunted black bears with my bow over bait in over a decade, and quickly realized how much I missed doing this hunt.
I hunted Bear, Moufflon and Sheep on this trip and all phases were well organized and a lot of fun. The outfitter had everything in order and our guides knew what they were doing and how they were going to get me on game. The trip was a lot of fun and I’d highly recommend it.
