Trip Taken: Elk/Deer Combo Backcountry Hunt in Idaho
Consultant: Kyle Hanson, Outdoors International
Great hunt.
This hunt involves taking a small plane into the Frank Church Wilderness, where the guide meets you at the air strip with a string of horses and pack mules. From there you travel a few hours up to camp on horseback.
The hunt is long-range spot and stalk, via horseback and foot.
Given the huge country, we were only able to hunt one bull per day. We’d spot one in the morning, then spend the rest of the day on the stalk. We didn’t see any large bull elk, but did see a few bulls each day. Weather was clear and hot, so elk were holding to shade and dark timber for most of the day.
I’d recommend this hunt for anyone wanting a classic, western backcountry horseback hunt.
Accommodations were great, as was the food and guiding. I saw no mule deer bucks on my September hunt, but was successful in taking a bull.
