Trip Taken: Vessel Based Mountain Goat Hunt in Alaska
Consultant: Russ Meyer | OUTDOORS INTERNATIONAL
Upon arrival in Valdez, Alaska I was met by my guide, and to say we hit it off would be an understatement. After grabbing my luggage, we were off to camp. Camp on this trip was different from what I was used to. For the next week we were staying on a yacht! This was the kind of camp I could get used to!
After a good night of sleep, my guide and I were off to chase some mountain goats!
Within ten minutes of the boat ride, we were spotting goats. After going through our options, we finally picked out a lone goat bedded on the side of a cliff! Two hours later, and we were standing above the lone billy. Not quite big enough, we moved on.
The next day, my guide and I found a bachelor group of billies. Three of which were worthy of an arrow. Within a few hours, we were in archery range of the five bedded billies. A half hour later, and I sent an arrow through the 9+ inch Pope and Young Billy!
Hunting mountain goats has been one of my lifelong goals. Always thinking such a hunt was just out of my financial bracket, I never thought much of pursuing it. That was until Russ Meyer gave me a call. Knowing that goats were on my bucket list, Russ got the ball rolling, and before I knew I was on my way to Alaska.
