Hippopotamus hunting targets one of Africa's largest and most dangerous mammals, known for its aggression and territorial nature, especially near water. Legal, regulated hippo hunting occurs in several African countries, including Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia, typically under strict quota systems and requiring specific permits.
Common hunting methods include:
- Stalking on Land: Carefully approaching hippos when they emerge from water to graze (usually early morning or late evening) or bask on riverbanks. This requires stealth and attention to wind direction.
- Ambush: Waiting near known paths used by hippos to travel between water and grazing areas.
- Shooting from Shore: Targeting hippos in the water generally requires a precise brain shot, which is difficult. Hippos typically sink when shot in water and float later, making recovery potentially hazardous due to crocodiles. Targeting hippos fully or partially out of the water is often preferred.
Hippo hunting is considered extremely dangerous due to the animal's size, speed on land, powerful jaws, and unpredictability. Experienced Professional Hunters (PHs) and heavy caliber rifles (.375 H&H minimum, often .416 or larger recommended) with solid bullets are essential for safety and an ethical hunt. International trade in hippo parts (like ivory tusks) is regulated under CITES Appendix II.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.
This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.Oliver Fischer
