The key to British Columbia moose hunting is getting remote by horse, boat or float plane. The further back you go the better the bulls will be. Bulls in BC, especially Northern BC moose can push over that magical 50 inch mark. A 50 inch bull in the Prince George are is definitely a shooter and north of Smithers a guy can get into 60 inch bulls.
Subspecies of Moose in BC
- Canada Moose in British Columbia are considered Western Canada Moose. They are slightly larger than the Eastern variety. Eastern Canada moose occur east of an imaginary line drawn across Ontario.
- Shiras moose range begins in Southern British Columbia and extends through the Rocky Mountains south to Colorado and Utah. Shiras bulls have the smallest antlers of the North American moose.
Where is the Best British Columbia Moose Hunting?
Western Canada moose in BC are found east of the Coast Mountains, but in general, Canada moose get bigger the further north you go. Historically, the center of the province (the Omineca and Cariboo Regions) offer some of the highest densities and best moose hunting in North America. After you cross the Yukon border, they are considered Alaska-Yukon Moose.
Which BC hunt we suggest to you depends on your budget, physical fitness level and trophy quality expectations.
- The first option is our trophy moose hunt in Northern British Columbia. Our Northern BC moose hunts easily compete with the Yukon for trophy Canadian moose, and these bulls even rival Alaska! In fact, if you’re going to spend the money on a trophy moose hunt, this is our first choice! Your chances at a record book moose are more likely on these British Columbia guided moose hunts here than any other region.
- Our second option is a great, lakeside cabin-based hunt. This outfitter offers a great fall moose hunt that you can combo with black bear. We have been working with this outfitter for years and if you are looking for big Canadian moose and black bears at a reasonable price then this is the one.
- Last but not least is a hunt in the Prince George area. The only problem with this hunt is availability.
WE WORK WITH GREAT OUTFITTERS
The outfitters that we work with for our Northern BC moose hunts have been thoroughly vetted and have a reputation for taking giant bulls every year.
Be ready for a true wilderness experience. The fact that it can only be reached by bush plane, horse, on foot, or by boat keeps the hunting pressure low, and trophy quality high. These are over-the-counter hunts, and you’ll be hunting during the prime moose rut from mid-September to the end of October, when the moose are responding to calling.
Our primary outfitter for our Northern BC moose hunts offers two primary options: horseback hunts and boat hunts. Each option provides a unique experience for hunters looking to pursue moose and, in some cases, mountain caribou.

Ask Us About This Moose HuntOUR MOST AFFORDABLE BRITISH COLUMBIA MOOSE HUNTS
The Prince George region of British Columbia has been long known for its beautiful scenery and great moose hunting.
Located in East Central BC, our Outfitters 980 square miles of pristine wilderness of the Rockies is no exception. The Prince George region of British Columbia is referred to by the locals as the “wet side” of the Rockies. Characterized by a high annual rainfall, offers a unique and exciting experience, especially for moose hunting. The lush undergrowth, abundant food sources, and swamps create an ideal habitat for moose.
This hunt is both affordable and unique in that it is cabin based.
Depending on the hunt you choose, you could choose to spend four days hunting from the lodge and four days on a river float. The float is optional and we do have the ability to customize the trip for those wanting to spend the full eight days hunting from the lodge or the river on a wilderness adventure!
- When hunting from the lodge, hunters should expect to wake up early to a home cooked meal prior to heading out for the morning hunt. Moose are most active during the morning and evening hours. Unless hunting dictates otherwise, hunters and guides will head back to the lodge mid day for a quick lunch prior to heading back out for the afternoon/evening. Hunters should expect to get back later every night from the field for dinner.
- During the river float, hunters can expect a similar daily schedule as the lodge-based portion. However, hunters should expect to cover ground throughout the day by foot or floating the river when necessary to locate mature bulls!
HORSEBACK MOOSE HUNTS
British Columbia guided moose hunts are one of the few places where you can do a horseback moose hunt.
Horses are used to help you reach higher vantage points, ideal for spotting moose, or to cover ground by hunting the edges of timber and willow draws.
- This method requires physical endurance and is perfect for hunters seeking a more challenging experience.
- For those interested, you can also add a mountain caribou to your horseback moose hunt, creating a unique British Columbia moose/caribou combo adventure.
- These hunts can be physically demanding, but they have a high success rate on trophy bulls.
BOAT BASED MOOSE HUNTS
If you’re looking for something a little less demanding, you should consider one of our float hunts.
On a boat hunt you will travel the lakes and/or rivers while calling for moose; you may also take short hikes up to vantage points and meadows.
- Generally these boat hunts are booked 2-on-1, making it a great opportunity to hunt with a friend or family member.
- One-on-one hunts can also be arranged if you’d rather hunt alone.
- Since there is great moose density in this area of Northern BC, our float hunt is perfect for archery hunters.
It’s important to note that lake hunts are not exclusively for older hunters; they can provide an epic experience for fit hunters as well. The lakes in British Columbia consistently yield large moose and high success rates. If your primary goal is to hunt big moose and you’re not a fan of horseback hunting, you can inquire for more details about lake and river hunts.
Both options offer unique opportunities to experience the wilderness of British Columbia and pursue moose and, if desired, mountain caribou. The choice between horseback and boat hunts ultimately depends on your physical abilities, preferences, and the kind of hunting experience you’re seeking.
BRITISH COLUMBIA MOOSE HUNTING COMBO OPTIONS
Our Northern BC moose hunts offer some of the best trophy combo hunts in the world!
We actually work with two separate outfitters in Northern BC. Both of them offer spectacular moose hunting, however one has slightly better mountain goat hunting, and the other has tremendous hunting for Mountain caribou. On either of these hunts, it’s also possible to add on a black bear for a trophy fee. If you’re leaning towards a combo hunt (and we think you should) we will help you decide which outfitter is right for you.
MOOSE / MOUNTAIN CARIBOU COMBO HUNTS
This combo hunt is undoubtedly one of the best opportunities for hunters in the region. We highly recommend that you combo Northern BC moose hunts with a Mountain caribou.
- The prime season for Mountain caribou is September when they come from miles around to rut in the area.
- During the rut, caribou bulls average 350-380 B&C, with some taken over 400 inches each year.
- The success rate for these combo hunts is very high, in fact, most of our hunters take both animals.
MOOSE / MOUNTAIN GOAT COMBO HUNTS
Hunting mountain goats offers an exhilarating adventure for those with the stamina and determination to pursue these magnificent creatures. While their trophy value is often underestimated, the rewards of this challenging hunt are well worth the effort.
- To navigate the rugged terrain where the goats live, horses provide invaluable logistical support, saving hunters at least 1,000 feet of climbing. This makes the hunt more accessible and efficient.
- The area that you’ll be hunting holds between 850 to 900 mountain goats, providing ample opportunities for a successful hunt.
- The region has consistently delivered, with most years resulting in a remarkable 90-100% success rate of meeting allotted quotas. This not only speaks to the abundance of goats but also the expertise of the hunting guides in this area.
MOOSE / ELK COMBO HUNTS
We do have a limited moose/elk combo hunt availability, featuring one of the most vocal and thrilling game animals in British Columbia. The hunting area encompasses open poplar flats, river hillsides, and wide valleys with alfalfa fields, providing an ideal habitat for elk. Regardless of the hunting season, this region offers some of the finest elk hunting opportunities, with bulls ranging from 300 to 340 class and boasting heavy mass.

Randy Taylor –
After a few negative experiences with Outfitters, I decided to trust Kyle Hanson @ Outdoors International. Hoping they truly vetted options, I booked a moose/caribou combo hunt in BC w/ reservation. I could not have asked for a more fun and professional group than this British Columbia hunting outfitter and his team. Relaxed and low key, but got after it when it mattered. Wonderful experience!
