Western Canada is the practical middle ground for moose. The bulls are big, the country is
reachable without the cost and complexity of an Alaskan or Yukon fly-in, and the outfitters
here are used to hunters who fly in with two duffels and a rifle case.
The rut is the whole game. Calling a bull in during the last week of September is one of
the genuinely great experiences in North American hunting, and it collapses a hard hunt into
a short, loud, very close-range one. Outside the rut, it’s spot-and-stalk over big timber and
cutlines, and it takes longer.
