France offers a rich tapestry of outdoor pursuits, from high-adrenaline mountain adventures to traditional hunting and fishing experiences across its diverse landscapes.

Adventure Travel: France is a major destination for adventure travel, particularly in mountainous regions like the Alps and Pyrenees. Activities include hiking and trekking (Tour du Mont Blanc, GR20 in Corsica), mountaineering (climbing Mont Blanc), skiing, ski touring, and snowshoeing. Rock climbing, via ferrata, canyoning, and paragliding are popular in areas like the Verdon Gorge and Ardèche. Numerous rivers offer opportunities for rafting and kayaking, while the extensive coastline caters to sailing, sea kayaking, and surfing (especially Biarritz). Cycling is also prominent, with routes through vineyards (Loire Valley, Burgundy, Provence), along canals, and challenging mountain climbs. Hot air ballooning provides scenic views, particularly over the Loire Valley chateaux.

Wingshooting (Chasse aux oiseaux): France has strong wingshooting traditions. Driven hunts for pheasant, red-legged partridge, and mallards are common, often hosted on private estates with specific bag expectations. Walked-up shooting over pointing dogs targets similar species plus grey partridge and woodcock. Hunting for migratory birds like wood pigeon, snipe, and waterfowl is also prevalent, often requiring specific techniques like hunting from hides (postes fixes). Key regions include Burgundy, Sologne, and Southwest France.

Fishing (Pêche): Fishing opportunities abound in France's rivers, lakes, and coastlines. Freshwater fishing targets trout (brown, rainbow) and grayling, particularly in the rivers and clear mountain streams of the Alps, Pyrenees, and Massif Central (fly fishing is popular here). Major rivers like the Loire, Rhône, and Dordogne, along with numerous lakes ('étangs'), hold populations of pike, perch, zander, carp, and catfish. Carp fishing, in particular, attracts many anglers to both public and private venues. Atlantic salmon can be found in some rivers. Saltwater fishing is available along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. A fishing license ('carte de pêche') is required for freshwater fishing.

Big Game Hunting (Chasse au grand gibier): France offers significant big game hunting. Wild boar (sanglier) and roe deer (chevreuil) are widely hunted, often through driven hunts ('battues') or stalking/high-seat methods. Red deer (cerf) and fallow deer (daim) are also pursued, with stalking during the rut being a prime time. Mountainous regions like the Alps and Pyrenees provide challenging hunts for various subspecies of chamois and for mouflon. Hunting requires a French hunting license ('permis de chasser') and adherence to specific seasons and regional regulations. Many outfitters offer guided hunts across the country.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
