The Wild Turkey Royal Slam is one of the most respected achievements in turkey hunting, recognized by the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF). It builds on the classic Grand Slam by adding the challenge of harvesting the elusive Gould’s subspecies — pushing hunters beyond U.S. borders into the rugged landscapes of northwestern Mexico (or limited draws in the Southwest U.S.).
What Makes the Royal Slam Special?
To officially complete a Royal Slam, you must harvest and register five distinct subspecies of wild turkey:
- Eastern — The classic gobbler of hardwood forests east of the Mississippi.
- Osceola (Florida) — Often considered the toughest of the U.S. birds due to limited range and wary behavior in swamps and palmettos.
- Rio Grande — Found across the plains and brush country of the central and southwestern U.S.
- Merriam’s — Mountain and prairie dwellers of the West, known for striking white-tipped feathers.
- Gould’s — The extra step that defines the Royal Slam; larger birds with long legs, adapted to drier, mountainous regions primarily in Mexico.
Fewer than 700 hunters have officially registered this feat with the NWTF, making it significantly rarer than the Grand Slam (which thousands have achieved).
The Gould’s hunt often requires international travel, proper permits, and working with experienced outfitters — adding real logistics, cost, and cultural adventure to the pursuit.
I didn't think an experience like this was possible.
This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

What an amazing experience!
The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
