Spring and Fall Hunting Seasons

Arizona boasts generous black bear seasons, often running through spring and fall, contingent on sow harvest quotas for specific units.

Hound Hunting

The thrill of the chase, behind a well-trained pack of hounds, and the reward of encountering such a magnificent cat make this a highly sought-after North American hunt.

Why Choose Arizona for Your Black Bear Hunt?

While mule deer and elk hunting often steal the spotlight in Arizona, it’s clear that the state has more to offer, especially for those interested in pursuing black bears. The underutilized nature of these opportunities could be a hidden gem for hunters looking to diversify their experiences and potentially bag a record-sized bear.

*When black bear hunting Arizona, keep in mind that the bears tend to run slightly smaller in body size than their northern counterparts, but what they may lack in body they make up for with skull size.

Our outfitters will assist with field transportation, game retrieval, and typically provide camp accommodations and meals (verify specifics with your OI consultant).

Access to areas known for healthy bear populations and trophy potential, within Arizona’s designated Game Management Units (GMUs).

Arizona boasts generous black bear seasons, often running through spring and fall, contingent on sow harvest quotas for specific units. This provides flexibility for planning your hunt. Key food sources like acorns, berries, and prickly pear attract bears, and our outfitters know how to pattern them.

  • Spring Hunts (March – July, some draw-based, some OTC): Hunt bears as they emerge from dens, focusing on fresh vegetation and water sources.
  • Fall Hunts (August – December, primarily OTC): Often considered prime time as bears actively forage to build winter fat reserves.

Our OI consultants and endorsed outfitters will help you understand tag requirements (OTC vs. draw) and the critical sow quota system. The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) is the final authority on all regulations, and it’s vital to stay informed about unit closures by checking the AZGFD website or their hotline (1-800-970-BEAR).

Arizona black bear hunting is typically a spot-and-stalk endeavor.

It is illegal to bait for bears in Arizona (other than in places such as the White Mountain Apache Reservation), so the most effective hunting strategy for black bear hunting Arizona is finding a food source and start glassing for a monster bear. It’s a strange experience to hunt black bears down in desert country as they feed on the prickly pear cactus. The locals refer to it as “bears in the pears.” Once you find a shooter, plan a stalk.

Bear hunting with hounds in Arizona is great fun.

The combination of using hounds in the morning and glassing for bears in the evenings adds variety and adventure to the hunting trip.

The process of hunting bears with hounds, approaching the treed bear, and deciding whether to harvest it offers a unique and hands-on hunting experience. The afternoon stalks are based around the bears’ food sources adds an element of strategy to the hunt.

Glassing vast canyons and rugged mountains for bears, followed by a strategic stalk. Ideal for those who enjoy a physically engaging hunt with potential for long-range shots.

A traditional and highly effective method in Arizona, where experienced houndsmen use well-trained dogs to trail and tree or bay a bear. This often results in exciting, close-range encounters.

In our experience, predator calling works surprisingly well for Arizona black bear hunting…. which can get exciting. Hound hunting is also legal in Arizona, and can be a fun option.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
