Kodiak Island is considered by many the best Alaska brown bear hunting available.
The Alaska Department of Fish & Game has determined that brown bear populations are healthy and growing on Kodiak Island. Accessible via a short remote charter flight. This area produces some of the largest brown bears taken not only on Kodiak, but the state of Alaska each year.
Southern Kodiak Island
These hunts will be conducted in a legendary exclusive concession on the South end of Kodiak Island first held by “Frenchie” Lamoureux. Our outfitter was awarded this Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge concession through a competitive prospectus process in the fall of 2022 and will hold the permit starting in 2024. Even this concession is new to him, it is very familiar because his entire crew guided for the previous outfitter.
Lodging for these hunts will be in cabins. These will provide a warm, dry base camp, but some hunts require spike camps.
The Kodiak Slam
In the fall, brown bear hunters on Kodiak Island have the option to combo their hunt with Sea ducks, Sitka blacktail and/or mountain goat. Goat hunting depends on whether or not you have a tag and the area you’re hunting.
Kodiak Island and all of the islands of the archipelago are home to a very large population of Sitka Blacktail, which begin their rut on or about the 1st of November. This timing coincides with the fall brown bear hunting season ok Kodiak Island. Of course, you’ll concentrate solely on securing your trophy brown bear before switching to deer hunting, but if a nice buck is spotted there’s always the option to switch gears on the fly.

The Alaska Peninsula Beats Kodiak Island for HUGE Brown Bears
Our Alaska Peninsula brown bear hunt is in a premier hunting area. It is only hunted on even numbered years during the spring, and is hands down the best location for trophy sized brown bears in Alaska. This region is good, if not better than Kodiak Island for huge coastal brown bears.
Most Alaska brown bear hunting trips on the Peninsula are fly-in remote spike camps, as well as a few hunts with hunting lodge accommodations and yacht-based options.
- SPRING HUNT: May 10-31 (only on even numbered years)
- FALL HUNT: October 1-21 (only on odd numbered years)
Limited Lodge and Yacht-based Brown Bear Hunts on the Peninsula

Or you can choose our yacht based Alaska Peninsula brown bear hunt and have your own private room and meals prepared by a chef. These spots are severely limited, so contact us fast if you’re interested.
Ask About Alaska Brown Bear HuntingAfognak Island Brown Bear Hunting Lodge
This isn’t a traditional Alaska brown bear hunting trip where you spend every day glassing.
Afognak Island is a small land mass about 20 miles long and 40 miles wide off the coast of Alaska in the Kodiak Archipelago. There are fewer than 100 permanent residents, most of whom work at a state-run salmon hatchery. There are no bars or shopping malls on Afognak, but there is a large population of Kodiak brown bears and a few healthy herds of Roosevelt elk. There aren’t many reasons to visit this place and even fewer motivations for someone to take up residence on the island. That’s what makes Afognak Island brown bear hunting so incredible.
This lodge-based brown bear hunt on Afognak Island is about as good as it gets.
Afognak Island brown bear hunting out of a hunting lodge is one of our most popular hunts. It produces big boars for our hunters year after year. Space is limited so book early.

The bears are very nice. After field judging quite a few, we killed two nice boars. A 9 foot, 3 incher and a 8 foot, maybe 7 incher.
