Montana provides a classic elk hunting experience that combines a Western adventure with opportunity, and awe-inspiring scenery. Whether you’re a seasoned elk hunter or new to it, Montana elk hunting offers a chance to pursue these majestic animals in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country.
High Elk Population
With one of the highest elk populations in the United States, Montana provides plenty of opportunities to encounter large herds. The state’s elk numbers are estimated to exceed 150,000, making it more likely to find quality bulls. The high population density increases your odds of success, whether you’re after a mature bull or just looking for a memorable hunting experience.
Variety of Montana Elk Hunting Seasons
Montana offers multiple hunting seasons, including archery, rifle, and muzzleloader options. The archery season typically starts in early September, coinciding with the elk rut when bulls are most active and vocal. Rifle season extends well into November, allowing for hunting in diverse weather conditions, from the warm early season to snowy late season hunts. This variety gives hunters the chance to tailor their experience to their preferred method and time of year.
Over-the-Counter Tags and Limited Draws
While some states have highly restrictive draw-only systems, Montana offers both over-the-counter tags for certain areas and special limited-entry permits for more exclusive hunting zones. This balance allows hunters to either plan spontaneous trips with general tags or apply for limited-entry hunts that provide access to areas with less hunting pressure and potentially larger bulls.

Experience Elk Hunting on a Well-Managed Ranch in Central Montana
ARCHERY AND RIFLE HUNTS
Hunters are invited to pursue elk on a carefully managed 10,000-acre ranch nestled in the foothills of the Crazy Mountains in central Montana. This Montana elk hunting ranch is designed to offer a premium hunting experience by limiting the number of hunters, which reduces pressure on the game and increases the chances of a successful hunt. Hunting tactics include a combination of ground blinds, calling, and spot-and-stalk methods, allowing for a versatile and adaptive approach.
While vehicles can access the property, efforts are made to minimize disturbance by primarily using horses and hiking. The trophy potential on the ranch varies depending on factors such as time of year, temperature, and weather patterns, but hunters typically have opportunities to pursue impressive 5×5 and 6×6 bulls.
Moderate Terrain for a Great Elk Hunting Experience
The ranch features what can be considered moderate terrain for elk country, allowing hunters to experience the excitement of elk hunting without the need to climb thousands of feet every day. However, with elevations exceeding 6,000 feet, the landscape still presents a challenge, making it essential for hunters to arrive in good physical condition. Being in shape not only enhances the overall experience but also improves the odds of a successful hunt.

This is one of our Montana elk, deer combo hunts.
This northwest corner of Montana is not typical “Big Sky Country.” The Yaak Valley is much more like the Pacific northwest and is heavily timbered, lush, and green. They like to hunt hard on foot and we like to hunt the old fashioned way. There are no feeders or high fences here, just wilderness with lots of game and very few people or pressure. With over 100 square miles on our Kootenai National Forest concession, they are the only outfitter in the area. They are a small operator and only run three guides per week (maximum of 6 hunters).
This northwest corner of Montana is heavily timbered and mountainous. Being in good shape is a huge plus. Guests will hunt hard here and we hunt with boots on the ground all day.
All hunts can be whitetail deer/elk combination if desired. Additionally, black bear tags and wolf tags can be added as well.
Nearly 100% opportunity on 120+ inch whitetails, as well as good opportunity for elk. During the rifle season (last week of October through November) they concentrate on trophy Montana whitetails in the 140+ inch plus B&C range. Ideally, the outfitter would like every bull elk to be 330 inches B&C or better, and many of them are. However they run on the “any legal bull is a good bull” philosophy.
- Rifle Hunts: The last week of October through end of November (five weeks) fall during the whitetail rut and deer will be the focus.
- Archery Hunts: The last week of September and first week of October will be focused on elk with only two hunters per hunt. Success during the archery season is good and bugling and cow calling is very effective.
