Trip Taken: Texas Axis Deer Hunt

My wife Sue and I wanted to have a spring hunt after our winter in California’s Sierra. I had heard about Axis deer hunts in Texas and was intrigued so I reached out to Kyle Hanson. Per his recommendation booked a hunt on a ranch in the South Texas Hill Country. It’s a beautiful 26,000 acre property, with a spacious well appointed lodge overlooking the Llano River. Josh Brower was our guide/cook/all around fun cowboy for the hunt.
We saw plenty of game, Axis deer and whitetail every day of the hunt.
My wife bagged her first big game animal on this trip, a very respectable buck, that was larger than my old buck. She’s been an avid upland bird hunter, but decided to try her hand at big game hunting. The best thing is I’ve got a new hunting partner, she’s hooked and loves the hunt.
I connected with a great 4-5 year old cagey buck.
He was a warrior, losing horn mass, and broken tines from fighting. but had a beautiful white cape from he’s old age. They have a local taxidermist that gives great rates to COA guests. We’re Euro mounting Sue’s buck and I’m having the hide tanned on my old man due to his great cape.
There are some incredible bucks on the ranch.
We saw a few bucks that were in the 36″-40″ class. I have a whole new appreciation for these animals, being this the first time I’ve hunted them. They are TOUGH, intelligent, and very wary if something is out of place. They live in habitat that has tons of thorns, spikes, cactus, Russian thistle, thick Cedars and scrub. The ranch has isolated feed plots that really draw the game in.
Be on top of your shooting, as these deer can take a shot and keep on their feet, and can dive into deep cover putting distance under them even with a good vitals shot.

They have books amazing hunts that fund their main focus of getting kids that don’t have the opportunity to get into the outdoors and hunt and experience God’s creation. They offer something for kids that have NEVER been in the woods, never played in a river, never seen wildlife, disadvantaged city kids that have no idea of anything but cities and strife. They even have scholarship programs to help especially poor kids that need a helping hand. Top notch Lodge, property and guides. We’re already planning on hooking up with COA and hopefully Josh next spring, after our winter in the Sierra.

- Do you have anything to add about your consultant? This is the second hunt I’ve booked with Kyle. He’s always available via text, phone or email. I throw a thought for a hunt out and he’s right on it with a spot on recommendation. He always follows through to make sure your hunt is what you anticipated. Great consultant and definitely a hunter and gets it!

What an amazing experience!
The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing.
