You hear that you’re going to see lots of deer, but it’s hard to comprehend how many there are. It’s safe to say the we probably saw 1,000 deer a day.
Axis deer are strange in that they rut all year around, so it is not unusual to see bucks in velvet right next to hard-antlered bucks. Like whitetail deer, axis are very wary, jumpy animals…and they’re tough. If you’ve never hunted them before, it’s much like whitetail hunting. You’ll be sitting in tree stands or in ground blinds in most instances, however spot-and-stalk hunting for axis deer can be a fun challenge. Hunters in the know love hunting axis bucks.
This is one of our favorite hunts. The Axis deer in the Texas Hill Country go into full rut in late May and June. They roar their heads off as they search for their does and fend off the other big bucks in the area. If you like elk hunting then you will love to Axis hunt.
