British Columbia arguably has the largest population of black bears per square mile in North America. The mild coastal climate provides the bears with a very long feeding season starting early in the spring and ending late in the fall on the salmon spawning rivers. With abundant food and low hunting pressure, it’s easy to see why British Columbia black bear hunting is so good!

If you’re looking for an amazing spot-and-stalk experience, look no further than a British Columbia black bear hunt. Especially if you’re a bowhunter! Over the years, a good number of the bears taken by our hunters have been color phase, with boars measuring the Pope and Young minimum of 18 inches being common.

Not only is there a high bear density in this area of British Columbia, but there is also a record book quality in the gene pool. Six to seven foot boars are common, with 95% of harvested bears being mature boars. New boars quickly move in to replace those that are taken by hunters. This is due to the strong salmon run in the fall, and dense population of black bears in the area.

We offer some great British Columbia black bear hunting trips ranging from Spring spot-and-stalk hunts, lodge based hunts, and combo moose hunts.

Spot-and-stalk British Columbia black bear hunting

Outdoors International Premier Outfitter

This spot-and-stalk British Columbia black bear hunt is our #1, go-to hunt. It has the highest success for both our archery and rifle hunters of all of our bear hunts.

When the bears come out of hibernation they head to the nearest green area to gorge themselves. Thus they are found along old logging roads, clear cuts, fields, and railways. You and your guide will focus your efforts in these areas early in the spring.

If you come later in the spring season (end of May, through June) the black bear rut will be in full swing and the boars start to wander looking for sows in heat. At this time you and your guide be sticking to glassing long stretches of logging roads and the railways. This is the time that the really big boars show up, and thus the biggest bears of the season are shot during this time.

It’s not uncommon to see 15 or more days a day!

On this British Columbia black bear hunt, multiple stalks are typically the rule rather than the exception. Be prepared for a relaxing and enjoyable hunt. We do not get up at the crack of dawn as the big bears are primarily moving in the afternoon and evenings but at that point be ready for multiple stalks and large numbers of bears.

The outfitter,  his wife Lana and their team of guides set up a great camp for us. Lana’s cooking was top notch and she created great meals daily.

  8. Dan Szafranski

In my opinion all aspects of my hunt were met or exceeded, and I would definitely recommend this outfitter to other bear hunters using either bows or rifles. My plan will be to return when possible.

  9. Kyle Hanson

This was my second time black bear hunting with this outfitter and it may not be the last. The quality of bears in this area was unreal. I saw the largest bear I’ve ever seen in the wild. Even got to 62 yards with my bow before the wind swirled on us 10 minutes before dark. But still how cool is that? Stalking absolute Giant World Class Black Bears, and the first hunter in two years to do so in British Columbia!

  10. Bert Chandler

The entire bear hunting experience was a dream fulfilled. The camaraderie of the fellow hunters, the expertise and work ethic of the guide was exceptional! We saw numerous black bears on a daily basis and had multiple opportunities to shoot large boars. My grandson got a beautiful chocolate bear. Truly, the experience of a lifetime!

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you, Stan Masneri

What an amazing experience!

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
