New Mexico Elk Hunt
The overall trip was excellent! We had a few bumps in the road but at the end of the day, we came away with two trophies and me and my son had a hunt we won’t forget.
When we arrived at camp we didn’t expect the family’s numerous dogs and friendly donkey to be running everywhere. The restrooms could have used some cleaning as camp extended; they were filled with flies and the toilets could have used a cleaning. The facility was very old and run down which was a bit of a surprise, but once we got used to the situation we feel it was better than tent camping with no facilities whatsoever. 😊
I was a bit concerned with my son Jackson’s 1×1 guided hunt. The first two days he was put with a very inexperienced guide that was 18 years old. They did nothing but drive around for the first two days without laying eyes on a single elk. It definitely lowered his spirits and excitement for the hunt. The guide, Hunter, was very friendly and courteous and I think they became close by the end of the trip. I expressed my concerns with mine and Jeff’s guide, our guide, who completely understood and was great about the situation. He made sure that on day 3 Brad Pate was with Hunter, Jackson, and I. Our guide and Jeff went together to help find elk for us as Jeff got his elk on day 2.
Day 3 went much better and Jackson and I started seeing elk with Brad leading the way and our guide scouting as well. I ended up harvesting my elk (a nice 7×7) on day 3 and Jackson shot his bull (a heavy horned 5×5) the same day, but it was late and it got dark quickly while tracking him. We decided to come back the next morning and we had all the guides help that were available to find Jackson’s elk. It was an amazing group — our guides, Brad, Wes, Hunter, and two other guides came along whose hunters had already killed their bulls, to help with the recovery and helped pack out. It was a great group of guys!
All in all we accomplished what we wanted, taking home three nice bulls. Of course if the tables were turned and Jackson wouldn’t have gotten a bull and his first two days of hunting were wasted, this review could have went a much different direction.
I can’t say enough about our guides. They were very talented and great people. Brad, our guide, Hunter, Wes, and crew did an amazing job!

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. What an amazing experience!
The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!Scott Navares
