GET MORE INFO ABOUT THIS HUNT

New Mexico has become a top destination for trophy mule deer. This is because of healthy mule deer populations and quality genetics. Bucks with tall, wide racks and deep forks are common. Our New Mexico mule deer hunting trips take place in areas where there is limited hunting pressure, especially in draw-only zones that give our hunters an excellent chance at mature bucks. While some units do require a lottery draw, others offer landowner tags and over-the-counter options, making New Mexico an accessible destination for many hunters.

The state’s climate, food sources, and management practices all contribute to a healthy deer population, and New Mexico Fish and Game actively manages hunting pressure to ensure that deer herds remain stable and productive.

Guided Public Land Hunts

Many outfitters in New Mexico specialize in guiding hunters on public land hunts. These areas are typically in high-elevation forests, deserts, and foothills where mule deer thrive. Knowledgeable guides lead hunters to remote areas where big bucks can often be spotted, either by glassing large areas from vantage points or using spot-and-stalk techniques.

Private Land Hunts

New Mexico also offers excellent hunting on private ranches, where deer populations are often less pressured than on public land. Hunting on private property often improves odds of success, as these ranches are frequently managed for trophy-quality deer. Private land mule deer hunts typically offer a more exclusive experience, as outfitters work with landowners to control hunting pressure and maintain the quality of the deer herd.

New Mexico Landowner Tags

For hunters who prefer a do-it-yourself (DIY) approach, New Mexico offers the option to purchase landowner tags. These tags allow hunters to access specific properties or units without going through the draw. A landowner tag offers more flexibility and is a great way to ensure a spot on a New Mexico mule deer hunt even when state-issued tags are limited. We may be able to help you secure a NM landowner tag.

New Mexico Mule Deer Hunting Seasons

The season for mule deer hunting in New Mexico generally begins in October and runs through January, depending on the unit and the type of weapon used. The timing of your hunt can be critical, as the peak of the rut usually occurs in late November to early December.

  • Archery Season: Archery mule deer hunts take place in early fall and during the rut.
  • Rifle Season: Rifle season offers great opportunities and generally occurs during the rut, when bucks are highly visible. This season provides high success rates due to the increased visibility and movement of deer during this time.
  • Muzzleloader Season: New Mexico also has muzzleloader hunts, usually occurring before the rut.

My hunt was absolutely top notch.

The outfitter is a fantastic man and incredibly hard working and knowledgeable, there is no doubt he will do everything within his power to make peoples hunts successful and enjoyable. I plan to do it again with him next year for sure.

Our hunt was excellent.

We saw bucks every day along with all other sorts of wildlife. Mountain goats, bears, and foxes were common sights. Fishing and crabbing was special bonus. The food was excellent, the crew was amazing. Outdoors International did a great job of finding exactly what we were looking for.

What an amazing experience!

The hunting lodge was out of this world!, Rooms, food and the scenery were all A+. Our guide was exceptional and had us on Shiras moose all five days. We saw over 30 total with at least 10 bulls. They had a plan for everything including taxidermy and game processing.
