Oregon elk hunting is incredibly popular, second only to deer hunting. Oregon is home to two types of elk: Rocky Mountain elk in the eastern part of the state and Roosevelt elk in the west. The densest populations are in the Coast, Cascade, and Blue Mountain ranges. Hunters can pursue elk through both controlled (limited entry) hunts and over-the-counter (general season) opportunities.
Oregon Elk Hunting Seasons
Oregon provides various elk hunting options, including rifle, archery, and muzzleloader hunts, with special opportunities for youth under 17. For exact season dates and bag limits, refer to the current Oregon Big Game Regulations.
Rifle Oregon Elk Hunting Season
Rifle hunting in western Oregon is mostly general season, though some coastal areas require controlled tags. In northeastern Oregon, there is a week-long general season hunt with a spike-only bag limit (Rocky Mountain elk, 2nd season). The rest of eastern Oregon’s rifle seasons are controlled. General rifle seasons usually take place in October and November.
Archery Oregon Elk Hunting Season
Archery elk hunting is largely general season across the state and runs alongside the general archery deer season. The bag limit is typically “one elk” in many units. The season kicks off in late August and runs for 30 days, wrapping up in late September. Some units also offer controlled archery hunts.
Muzzleloader Oregon Elk Hunting Season
Muzzleloader hunts are available through controlled hunts, and for those who want a unique challenge, a Premium Elk Hunt tag allows hunters to pursue elk from September 1 to November 30 in almost all wildlife management units.

This great outfitter offers solid Roosevelt elk hunting in Oregon. The coastal rainforests of the northwest are among one of the toughest place to find and hunt elk. Roosevelt elk hunting can become a nightmare for any hunter trying to find the type of bull they’ve been dreaming of. With so much private land, dense vegetation, and just small pockets of public land here and there. We HIGHLY recommend hiring a good outfitter, and this one is among the best in the business.
This outfitter is the largest Roosevelt elk outfitter in the state harvesting 15-25 bulls a year across their leases and public ground. They control over 30,000 acres of private ground. Rifle hunts can include an LOP tag (landowner voucher) for non-residents.
