Bushbuck Hunts
Bushbucks (Tragelaphus scriptus) are medium-sized antelopes native to sub-Saharan Africa. These elusive creatures are known for their distinctive spiral horns, striking reddish-brown coat, and white spots and stripes adorning their bodies. Male bushbucks, also called rams, possess magnificent horns that can grow up to 30 inches in length, while females, known as ewes, typically do not have horns.
Habitat and Range
Bushbucks are primarily found in densely vegetated areas such as forests, thickets, and riverine habitats. They thrive in a diverse range of ecosystems, including savannas, woodlands, and coastal forests. Their wide distribution spans from Senegal and Guinea in West Africa to Ethiopia and Tanzania in East Africa, extending southward to South Africa.
Bushbuck Hunting Methods
Still Hunting
Still hunting, or stalking is a popular and effective hunting technique for bushbucks. This method involves slowly and quietly approaching the target while keeping a low profile. Utilize natural cover and vegetation to remain concealed, carefully observing the bushbuck's behavior and movement patterns.
Ambush
Setting up an ambush is another effective technique for hunting bushbucks. Identify strategic locations near watering holes, feeding areas, or game trails frequented by bushbucks. Patiently wait for the opportune moment when the bushbuck approaches, ensuring that you remain concealed and minimize any movement or noise that could alert the wary animal.
Calling
Using calls can be a successful method to attract bushbucks. Research and practice various bushbuck calls, such as grunts and snorts, to mimic their natural vocalizations. By imitating the sounds of a rival male or a distressed female, you can lure curious bushbucks within shooting range.
Tracking
Tracking is a skill that requires patience, observation, and a keen eye for signs of bushbuck activity. Look for fresh tracks, browse marks on vegetation, and scat along game trails or near water sources. Follow the trail stealthily, taking note of any recent signs that indicate the presence of bushbucks.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.
This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.
