British Columbia Mountain Goat Hunting Trips

Home to over half of North America’s current goat population, a British Columbia mountain goat hunt should be your go-to destination. Both the P&Y and B&C World Records were taken in BC. This outfitter keeps his hunts VERY exclusive, and caps his harvest at only a handful of billies per year. This ensures that this area produces quality book record trophies for our clients every year, and for the long term.

  • Ten day, 1-on-1 hunt.
  • High trophy quality. Billies average 9 3/4 inches.
  • VERY exclusive. This outfitter only takes a few goat hunters per year.
  • Our hunters have had nearly perfect success on BC goats over the years.
  • This British Columbia mountain goat hunt can be combined with a moose and/or a black bear depending on the area you’re hunting.
  • Limited fly-in, horseback goat hunts.
GET MORE INFO ABOUT THIS HUNT

British Columbia mountain goat hunting gives you a very realistic chance to take a record book billy. That said, we are NOT selling this as a hunt for a record mountain goat, but you can expect mature, good representatives and an unforgettable mountain hunting experience. Arguably the best thing about BC is there is little to no hunting pressure, because it’s super remote and difficult to access. This creates a secluded area which provides an exclusive hunting area.

BC mountain goats have huge bodies, with most mature billies weighing over 300 pounds. The average billie measures over 9 1/4 inches. These goats live in mountains that receive cold weather and snowfall as early as July and August, so BC is known for its long-haired billies.

British Columbia Mountain Goat Hunting

Our British Columbia Mountain goat hunting outfitters that we work with have been thoroughly vetted and have a reputation for taking giant billies every year.

If you are researching where to hunt for a trophy mountain goat with an amazing coat, you need look no further than a BC. Mountain goat hunting in British Columbia is arguably the best in the world. Beautiful BC has roughly 50,000 goats, and the most record book entries by far. Including the P&Y and B&C world record mountain goats. A trophy billie is in reach for those who can get to them and shoot straight.

Mountain Goat Hunting in British Columbia is where it’s at for big billies! Record book, 10 inch billies are common on these hunts, and our hunters consistently take goats scoring over 50 inches B&C.

We have hunting guides and outfitters in BC who produce multiple record book goats every year. They would harvest more record billies, but the fact is that most hunters are happy to shoot the first mature billy they get a chance at. British Columbia’s north coast along the border of Alaska is world renowned for having the highest number of trophy mountain goats in North America.

The average trophy on our British Columbia mountain goat hunting trips measures 9 1/4 to 9 3/4 inches, and for context a ten inch billy is an absolute monster. Many of the billies will live out their lives without ever seeing a human.

  • British Columbia is one of the only places with guaranteed, OTC goat tags.
  • Mountain goat populations in British Columbia get very little hunting pressure, which presents you with a great opportunity for mature animals.  You should see LOTS of goats. It’s common to see 10-20 goats every day.
  • BC is the top spot for trophy mountain goat hunting. In fact, it holds the current Pope and Young World Record, AND the Boone and Crockett World Record mountain goats!
  • These BC goats have huge bodies with most mature billies weighing in at over 300 pounds. British Columbia mountain goats are known for their long hair, even on early hunts.
  • Hunting areas will be accessed on foot, by 4×4, boats, and/or with horses.
  • Hunts in British Columbia are almost always combo hunts. You can add either a Stone sheep, moose, caribou, or black bear depending on the hunt you’re on. If you want to make your goat hunt a combo, they can easily be added onto early August sheep hunts, but we don’t target them as a primary animal until Late August/ Early September.
  • These are either 7 or 10 day hunts and the outfitter can make it as hard or easy as you like.
  • These hunts are typically remote, tent camp hunts, but we do have a rare “town hunt”.
  • This hunt has had 100% opportunity on hunts including archery, since the outfitter purchased the area in 2017.

Our primary outfitter for our Northern BC British Columbia hunts offers two primary options: horseback hunts and traditional backpack hunts. Each option provides a unique experience.

Mountain Goat Hunting on British Columbia’s Northwest Coast

The northwest coast of British Columbia, bordering Alaska, is home to North America’s highest population of mountain goats.

This exclusive guiding area is nestled in the heart of prime mountain goat habitat, featuring rugged peaks, expansive ice fields, and some of the continent’s most stunning alpine terrain. With over 40 alpine lakes to explore, this is probably the best British Columbia mountain goat hunting outfitter…possibly even the best goat hunt in the world.

Hunters can expect an abundance of trophy mountain goats, with record 10-inch billies being the norm rather than the exception. A strategic rotation of hunting areas helps maintain a healthy population and ensures top-quality goats on every hunt. The high density of mountain goats in this region allows for an extended hunting season, running all the way to the end of February.

Winter Hunts

Winter British Columbia mountain goat hunting offers a unique opportunity as the animals move down to their wintering grounds, closer to the base of the mountains. This season is ideal for hunters with physical limitations, as goats are more accessible and long-range shots of around 300 yards are often possible without extensive hiking. Access is facilitated using snow machines, ATVs, and snowshoes. During this time, mountain goats sport their thickest winter coats, offering prime trophy potential. This area of British Columbia offers exclusive winter hunting for mountain goats, providing a rare chance to pursue these animals in peak condition.

Late Season Hunts

Late season hunts take place as mountain goats begin to transition toward their rutting grounds. The animals move from their summer feeding locations to areas where they gather with nannies and kids, often in groups of two or three billies. These hunts involve climbing from the base of the mountains, though it is not extreme mountaineering; 1-3 hour climbs are typical. Hunters stay in well-equipped cabins or wall tents, and the hunts are supported by trucks, ATVs, and jet boats for easy access. This is an excellent time to harvest trophy billies with long, thick coats.

Early Season Fly-In Hunts

August and September are prime months for early season fly-in mountain goat hunts. Camps are set up near remote Canadian alpine lakes, offering wall tents with heating to withstand the region’s often wet and harsh weather. From the base camp, hunters can hike surrounding hills and ridges in pursuit of their trophy mountain goat. These areas are scouted yearly to ensure a high quality of game. Mountain goats are typically spotted near camp, making the hunts accessible even for less experienced or physically challenged hunters. Typically, hunts last no longer than 3-4 days, and only one or two goats are harvested per camp each season to maintain a thriving population. The focus is on harvesting mature trophy billies, not nannies, ensuring sustainability and top trophy quality.

Why Choose BC’s Northwest Coast for Mountain Goat Hunting?

With a combination of prime habitat, high population density, and careful management practices, British Columbia’s northwest coast offers an exceptional opportunity for trophy mountain goat hunting. Whether it’s a winter hunt for a long-haired billy, a challenging late-season climb, or a fly-in adventure to remote alpine lakes, this region provides an unforgettable hunting experience.

Horseback Mountain Goat Hunts

One of the things that makes British Columbia mountain goat hunting unique is that in some areas it can be done on horseback.

  • A goat can be added onto early August sheep hunts, or as a horseback moose combo.
  • Our outfitters don’t target them as a primary animal until late August/early September.
  • Mountain Goat populations are lightly hunted to ensure a great opportunity for mature animals.
  • These horseback hunts can be physically demanding, but they have a high success rate on trophy billies.

Remote backpack British Columbia Mountain Goat Hunting

A British Columbia mountain goat hunt, or a goat hunt anywhere for that matter involves a lot of glassing and hiking.

  • You and your guide will hike into the hunting territory and set up a lightweight tent camp.
  • From camp, you’ll spend a lot of time glassing the surrounding ranges until you find a trophy billy in a stalkable position.
  • Sometimes moving to a new location is required.
  • If you tag out early, which is entirely possible, you can continue hunting for a black bear or a wolf.

The trip was challenging, beautiful, exciting and pretty much everything I’d thought/hoped a mountain goat hunt would be. Hope my son can try it in a couple of years.

EARLY SEASON Mountain Goat Hunting in British Columbia

In August through September, you can fly-in for a backpack hunt. You'll be flown in to a remote alpine lake and stay in either wall tents with heat. From there, you'll spike out into the surrounding areas in search of your trophy, staying in 2-person pack tents.

REGULAR SEASON Mountain Goat Hunting in British Columbia

In October through November, you'll be targeting billies as they prepare for the rut. This can be a very physical hunt. You'll be climbing from the bottom of the mountains up to the goats...usually a one to three hour climb. This time of year, the goats will have beautiful, heavy coat.

WINTER Mountain Goat Hunting in British Columbia

If you’re worried about that climb, go in December through February. This time of year, the goats are near the bottom of the mountain. Hunters with physical limitations can have a good opportunity to take a trophy goat of a lifetime on these winter hunts. The current Pope and Young World Record mountain goat was taken on this winter hunt.

My hunt was absolutely top notch.

The outfitter is a fantastic man and incredibly hard working and knowledgeable, there is no doubt he will do everything within his power to make peoples hunts successful and enjoyable. I plan to do it again with him next year for sure.

Wade Zuver

Our hunt was excellent.

We saw bucks every day along with all other sorts of wildlife. Mountain goats, bears, and foxes were common sights. Fishing and crabbing was special bonus. The food was excellent, the crew was amazing. Outdoors International did a great job of finding exactly what we were looking for.

Jesse Neveau

What an amazing experience!

The hunting lodge was out of this world!, Rooms, food and the scenery were all A+. Our guide was exceptional and had us on Shiras moose all five days. We saw over 30 total with at least 10 bulls. They had a plan for everything including taxidermy and game processing.
