Strobel Lake Fishing Trip

This was the fishing trip of a lifetime!
My first trip to a remote lodge so I was unsure what to expect. Needless to say, I could never imagined it could be this awesome. I’ve trout fished since I was a small boy but never dreamed to have fishing like this. I could never imagine how you could bring 8 people together from different walks of life and have such a great time. The lodge, staff, food and guides were all excellent.
I was the least experienced fly fisherman in the group and the guides took their time and helped me develop better technique, especially casting into the wind. The trout were amazing, running in size from 5 to 15 lbs. They were all color phases from chrome to dark spawning colors. They took lots of different flies from beads, streamers, scuds and drys. I can’t wait to go back.
Our host, Patrick Kissel from Outdoors International would be hard to describe but I’ll try.
He organized our trip, helping sign up the group of people. He turned out to be one of the nicest, hardest working, knowledgeable people I’ve been around. Because of his desire that each of us have an outstanding experience, he went above and beyond the normal guide/client effort.
My son, who is a grown man, is in a wheelchair. A paraplegic, injured in a snowmobile accident, so he was unable to get to the stream that comes into the lake. The stream was a place all of us wanted to fish and was excellent. Unfortunately for my son, it is in a deep canyon. He would not be able to access it in his wheelchair. That is until Patrick lifted him on his back and carried him up and down to the creek, about 6 times. It gave him an opportunity to fish in spots he never would have been able to do. For that I will be forever grateful to Patrick for his dedication to see that his clients have the best experience possible.

I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to. We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be. The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly.
