TRIP TAKEN: DIY Alaska Moose Hunt

This was the first moose hunt for both my brother and me, and overall, it was an unforgettable experience. Kyle was incredibly helpful leading up to the trip—he took the time to walk us through what to expect and how to prepare, and everything played out just as he described.
We spent our days in the wet lowlands and basically lived in our waders—definitely glad I invested in a quality pair! We harvested great bulls on day 2 and day 8. Hauling out moose quarters through swampy terrain was grueling – something every hunter should experience at least once.
Our transporter did a fair job. Pre-hunt accommodations were comfortable, though, as expected, small-town Alaska prices are steep. Still, they put us in a great area with plenty of moose activity. Their responsiveness in the field and with meat extraction was top-notch. Once we tagged out, they worked with us to pull out of the field early, which we really appreciated.
The only downside to the entire experience was the loss of a hide we intended to keep. It went missing somewhere between packaging and delivery to Alaska Air Cargo. Since we departed Bethel on a Sunday when Air Cargo was closed, we weren’t able to oversee the transfer of all our items, and unfortunately, the hide never made it to us. That said, all meat and skulls arrived without issue.
All in all, this was a fantastic hunt. We learned a lot and are already looking forward to doing it again—with a few lessons under our belt for next time. Highly recommend.

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing.
