Scotland Free Range Red Stag Hunt
The trip to Scotland for a red stag was thoroughly enjoyable. My wife and I rented a car at the airport in Glasgow and did some touring before the hunt. We were put up in a hotel that had rooms above and a pub on the first floor. It was clean and very comfortable. The owner was an interesting Scot, born and raised in South Africa before settling in Scotland. We had several good conversations with him as we had hunted South Africa previously.
There was some confusion over the scheduled first day of the hunt. There was another hunter from Germany there with his wife and only one guide available for the first day. We took the rental car and visited Loch Ness, a castle or two and did a pub crawl. The next morning we met Brian, our guide, in the Highlands.
He had a Sako in 243 with a top of the line scope for my hunt. We went to an open area with a target and I fired one round from the our outfitter position at 100 meters. Brian was happy with my shot so the hunt began.
The guide had a large telescope he used to check out the hill sides. The hills were covered in heather but few to no trees. He used the lay of the land to make his approaches. After he spotted a good stag we tried to cut down the distance on the small herd. We came over a ridge that was a reasonable distance but, the ground I was laying on was uncomfortable. As I struggled to find a shooting position my movements alerted the herd and they were off.
Unfazed, Brian broke out lunch. After eating we resumed the hunt and found a similar group with a shooter. This hunt was a few years ago but I remember the distance to be about 200 yards. The stag dropped to the first shot. We had a photo session on the hillside. Brian saw to the recovery of the meat and rack (the meat went to a local butcher). My wife and I continued to enjoy our visit to Scotland for another few days. I got a European mount that was shipped back to the states after about a year. It is hanging on the wall next to me now. A reminder of a fun adventure and a good hunt.

What an amazing experience!
The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing.
