For a unique and memorable experience, you should consider one of our South Dakota bison hunting trips. Known for its vast prairies and rich bison heritage, this state offers both trophy and meat hunts that cater to a variety of hunting preferences.
Both residents and non-residents can apply for bison hunting licenses, particularly for hunts on state land like Custer State Park. These are typically awarded through a lottery system, with a limited number of tags available. We can help you with the application process. Private ranches might not require a license, simplifying the process but potentially at a higher cost.
The Bison Heritage of South Dakota
South Dakota has a deep-rooted connection with bison. From the days when millions roamed the Great Plains to the conservation efforts that have repopulated these majestic animals, South Dakota is synonymous with bison. Today, the state hosts several herds, with Custer State Park being one of the most famous due to its annual bison auction and limited hunting opportunities.
- Trophy Hunts: South Dakota offers hunts for mature bulls, that are often 10 years old or more. Custer State Park, for instance, provides a regulated trophy bull hunt aimed at herd management by removing older breeding bulls.
- Non-Trophy Hunts: These hunts are aimed at controlling herd numbers by hunting younger, less dominant bulls or cows. These hunts are less about the trophy and more about the experience and the meat yield. They are often more affordable and provide a chance to fill your freezer with high-quality bison meat.
- Private Ranch Hunts: Numerous private ranches in South Dakota offer a more personalized hunting experience. These can range from guided fair-chase hunts on vast acres to more controlled environments where hunters are guaranteed a bison.
South Dakota Bison hunting Ranches
South Dakota bison hunting on some of these ranches is a true western experience, and a wonderful off-season chance to fill your freezer with some of the healthiest meat available. You’ll be hunting the same plains country where “Dances With Wolves” was filmed. You and your guide will hunt bison on thousands of acres of a 4th generation working cattle ranch. How you hunt is up to you. Hunt your buffalo with a bow, black powder rifle or large caliber rifle.
After breakfast, you and your guides will venture into the canyons and breaks to harvest the size of bison you are looking for. You can hunt the animal of your choice ranging from a trophy bull, to a younger, more tender animal.
Your guide will field dress your animal and quickly get it to a processor that specializes in bison. You get to keep all your buffalo meat! By the way, if you’re on a budget, don’t throw shade at hunting a young bull or a cow! They produce large amounts of delicious meat, and a beautiful hide.

Daniel Niemeier –
This is a great and simple bison hunting trip. Ideal for young hunters getting started.
There were no surprises between us and the guide. Everything was communicated and just easy for us. The outfitter was a great host and a pleasure to spend multiple days with. We enjoyed the ranch as much as the hunt.
