Tahr Hunting

The Himalayan Tahr: A Majestic Game Species

Before we delve into the details of Tahr hunting, let’s acquaint ourselves with the remarkable Himalayan Tahr. This magnificent creature, native to the mountains of Nepal and Tibet, was introduced to New Zealand in the early 1900s. With their striking appearance, characterized by thick fur, impressive horns, and agile movements, Tahr present an extraordinary challenge for hunters.

Planning Your New Zealand Tahr Hunting Safari

Choosing the Ideal Hunting Season

To ensure a successful and rewarding Tahr hunting experience, it is crucial to select the ideal hunting season. In New Zealand, the Tahr hunting season typically runs from February to July, with the autumn months of March and April considered prime time for pursuing these elusive creatures. During this period, the Tahr’s coats transform into a magnificent winter color, providing excellent camouflage against the snowy landscapes.

Tahr Hunting Techniques

Spot and Stalk

Spot and stalk is a popular technique employed by Tahr hunters. It involves locating Tahr from vantage points, such as ridgelines or high ground, and then carefully maneuvering into position for a successful shot. Patience, stealth, and a keen eye are essential for this method, as Tahr have exceptional senses and can quickly detect human presence.

Alpine Hunting Strategies

Tahr hunting in the alpine regions requires exceptional physical fitness and mountaineering skills. The ability to traverse steep slopes, endure unpredictable weather conditions, and navigate challenging terrains is crucial. Our experienced guides possess extensive knowledge of the alpine environment, ensuring your safety and maximizing your chances of a successful hunt.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you, Stan Masneri

What an amazing experience!

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
