How to Field Judge an Alligator

If you’re wondering how to field judge an alligator, you’re not alone. It’s fairly simple if you know how, but be warned, there is math involved.

Learning how to field judge an alligator is all about their eyes.

  1. Locate the the midpoint between the eyes on the skull of an alligator.
  2. Estimate, in inches, the distance from the midpoint between the eyes to the midpoint between the nostrils.
  3. Record this number.
  4. Convert the number of inches to feet with 1 inch equaling 1 foot.

*EXAMPLE: Let’s say the distance from the midpoint between the eyes to the midpoint between the nostrils is 4 inches. The estimated length of that gator is four feet.

Our hunt was excellent.

We saw bucks every day along with all other sorts of wildlife. Mountain goats, bears, and foxes were common sights. Fishing and crabbing was special bonus. The food was excellent, the crew was amazing. Outdoors International did a great job of finding exactly what we were looking for.

What an amazing experience!

The hunting lodge was out of this world!, Rooms, food and the scenery were all A+. Our guide was exceptional and had us on Shiras moose all five days. We saw over 30 total with at least 10 bulls. They had a plan for everything including taxidermy and game processing.
