If you’re ready for a unique challenge for an exceptional trophy, start applying for a Utah bison tag. With some of the only huntable, wild herds in North America, Utah bison hunting, if you’re lucky enough to draw a tag is a difficult, but rewarding immersion into the history and conservation of one of North America’s iconic animals.
If you don’t want to deal with the State application system, we also have some good private herd options to book a Utah bison hunt in a ranch setting. On some of these private hunts, you can combo your hunt with an elk.

The Free Range Bison Herds of Utah
Utah manages two significant bison populations where hunting is permitted: the Antelope Island Bison Herd and the Henry Mountains Bison Herd. The Antelope Island herd, founded from 12 bison relocated from Texas in the late 19th century, now numbers between 550 to 700 strong, making it one of the largest public bison herds in the U.S. These animals roam the vast, scenic landscapes of Antelope Island State Park, offering hunters a truly wild experience. Meanwhile, the Henry Mountains herd, with 250 to 400 individuals, presents a more challenging hunt due to the rugged terrain and the bison’s free-ranging nature.
If you’re lucky enough to draw a tag, we highly suggest you hire the services of one of our vetted outfitters!
- Permit System: Bison hunting permits are highly coveted, and awarded through a lottery system. For the Antelope Island hunt, which occurs annually in December, you’ll need a specific permit, and hunters must be accompanied by a game ranger to ensure ethical and responsible hunting. The Henry Mountains hunt is a once-in-a-lifetime status due to the limited number of tags, requires thorough preparation and understanding of the area’s geography. Ask us about Utah Conservation Permits.
- Gear and Strategy: Historically, hunters used .45-caliber rifles, and this practice continues among those who enjoy the nostalgia of old-school hunting. However, a modern rifle will do the trick just fine. Contrary to popular opinion, bison are spooky and tough to hunt. Be ready for a physical, strategic hunt.
- Conservation and Management: Hunting in Utah serves a dual purpose; it’s not only about the thrill but also about managing bison populations to maintain ecological balance. The fees from hunting licenses contribute to the conservation efforts, including habitat maintenance and herd health programs on Antelope Island.
