Montana sheep hunting offers an extraordinary experience for hunters after a Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep. Known for its majestic landscapes and challenging terrain, Montana is a premier destination for hunting enthusiasts who aim to take on one of North America’s most sought-after big-game animals. The state’s well-managed sheep populations and varied terrain—from rugged mountain ranges to sweeping valleys—create optimal hunting opportunities that attract hunters from around the world.

Montana is home to several great areas for Bighorn sheep hunting, including the Missouri River Breaks, Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, and the Gravelly Mountains. Each area offers unique landscapes and habitats, which influence both the hunting strategy and accessibility.

  • Missouri River Breaks: This region features rugged, broken terrain along the Missouri River with steep hills and dense vegetation. It’s a challenging but rewarding area known for its population of mature rams.
  • Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness: Located along the Montana-Wyoming border, this mountainous region offers dramatic views, with rams often found at high elevations. Hunters here should be prepared for steep hikes and unpredictable weather.
  • Gravelly Mountains: Located in southwestern Montana, this area has a mix of open meadows and rugged mountains, making it accessible and varied in hunting opportunities.

Montana Bighorn Sheep Hunting Season and Regulations

Montana’s Bighorn sheep hunting season typically runs from early September to mid-November, depending on the specific hunting district. The state uses a lottery draw system to manage sheep hunting licenses, which helps maintain healthy sheep populations and ensures a quality hunting experience. Given the high demand and limited tags, securing a hunting license can be challenging, but the experience of hunting Bighorn sheep in Montana is well worth the wait.

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks department regulates hunting quotas and establishes specific hunting districts to monitor and sustain the state’s sheep populations. Hunters must adhere to Montana’s regulations, including the requirement to attend a sheep hunting orientation if it’s their first time drawing a Bighorn sheep license in the state.

Montana’s Bighorn sheep populations are a conservation success story, with significant efforts made to reintroduce and sustain healthy herds throughout the state. The state’s management strategies aim to preserve these populations, which were once threatened by habitat loss, disease, and overhunting. By regulating hunting through a draw system and setting strict limits on harvests, Montana ensures sustainable Bighorn sheep populations for future generations.

My hunt was absolutely top notch.

The outfitter is a fantastic man and incredibly hard working and knowledgeable, there is no doubt he will do everything within his power to make peoples hunts successful and enjoyable. I plan to do it again with him next year for sure.

Our hunt was excellent.

We saw bucks every day along with all other sorts of wildlife. Mountain goats, bears, and foxes were common sights. Fishing and crabbing was special bonus. The food was excellent, the crew was amazing. Outdoors International did a great job of finding exactly what we were looking for.

What an amazing experience!

The hunting lodge was out of this world!, Rooms, food and the scenery were all A+. Our guide was exceptional and had us on Shiras moose all five days. We saw over 30 total with at least 10 bulls. They had a plan for everything including taxidermy and game processing.
