Wisconsin has long been a top destination for whitetail deer hunting, and for good reason. The state boasts a rich hunting tradition and a reputation for producing some of the largest bucks in North America. From the rolling farmland of the Driftless Area to the dense northern forests, Wisconsin’s diverse habitats have given rise to legendary whitetails that every sportsman dreams of pursuing.
What Makes Wisconsin Bucks So Famous?
- Record-Book Trophies
Wisconsin whitetail hunting consistently ranks among the top states for Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young entries. Bucks like the iconic “Jordan Buck,” which held the world record for decades, and the more recent “Gollon Buck,” a 243-inch giant harvested in 2020, have solidified Wisconsin’s reputation for world-class deer. - Prime Habitat
The state’s mix of agricultural fields, woodlands, and marshes creates ideal conditions for deer to thrive. These environments provide plenty of food, cover, and space for bucks to grow to maturity, often reaching impressive sizes. - A Culture of Management
Wisconsin hunters take deer management seriously. From letting young bucks walk to promoting healthy herd dynamics, sportsmen and conservationists work together to ensure the state continues to produce trophy whitetails.
A Trophy Hunter’s Dream
For those chasing dreams of record-breaking whitetails, Wisconsin is the place to be. From the stories of legendary bucks to the chance of encountering your own trophy, the state’s whitetail heritage is second to none. Whether you’re drawn by the history of famous Wisconsin bucks or the thrill of the hunt, the Badger State offers an unforgettable experience for every sportsman.
Legendary Bucks of Wisconsin
The James Jordan Buck
This one-time world record scores a whopping 206 1/8 inches. The perfect 10-pointer was harvested in Burnett County back in 1914. This stunning 5×5 still ranks No. 2 on B&C’s all-time list of typicals. It’s hard to fathom a finer 10-pointer.
The Johnny King Buck
Depending on your scoring system of choice, Wisconsin is home of the World Record typical whitetail. The Johnny King buck has caused a controversy over how typical points should be calculated. Some argue the King Buck would topple Milo Hanson’s long-standing record if it was scored “properly”.
Tips for Hunting Famous Wisconsin Bucks
- Scout Smart: Study the land, look for rub lines, and track movement patterns to locate mature bucks.
- Leverage Food Sources: Wisconsin’s agricultural abundance makes food plots and field edges prime spots for big buck activity.
- Hunt the Rut: The rut in Wisconsin is legendary, with bucks on the move and more likely to expose themselves during daylight hours.
- Explore Public Lands: While private land offers great opportunities, Wisconsin’s public hunting areas also hold trophy potential for those willing to put in the effort.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.
This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.
