Ireland Fallow Deer Hunting Trips

You won’t be disappointed hunting fallow deer in Ireland with our OI Endorsed Outfitters.

Fallow deer represent one of Ireland’s premier hunting opportunities, blending historical significance with modern sporting challenge. Originally from the eastern Mediterranean region, they were introduced to Ireland by Norman invaders around the 12th century primarily for food, parkland display, and hunting on aristocratic estates.

Over centuries, escapes and deliberate releases from these enclosed deer parks led to established wild populations, supplemented by further introductions. Today, fallow deer are the most widespread deer species in Ireland, present in every county and across both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Imagine stalking through emerald hills and rugged cliffs on a private Irish island, where ancient castles overlook wild herds of Fallow deer roaming freely. This beautiful Island — a gem off the Dublin coast — offers one of the most exclusive deer hunting experiences in Europe. Here, free-range Fallow bucks thrive in a landscape of dramatic scenery, and historic charm.

This hunt stands out for its privacy and success. Historical records show a 100% opportunity rate for Fallow buck, making it a reliable choice for trophy hunters seeking quality over quantity. Beyond the Fallow, the broader Ireland program includes stalking elusive Sika and majestic Red stag across scenic mainland estates — though Lambay remains the crown jewel for Fallow deer.

What makes this island special?

Lambay is a privately owned island with limited access, preserving its wild character and healthy deer populations. Hunters enjoy uncrowded stalking over varied terrain: open feeding grounds, travel corridors, and steeper cliff areas where mature bucks often hold. The island’s isolation creates an intimate, almost timeless hunting atmosphere — far from crowds, with only your group, expert guides, and the sound of the Irish Sea.

Our hunters who’ve experienced it describe the trip as unforgettable. In a dedicated podcast episode, we share stories of the boat journey to the island, close encounters with herds of deer, the thrill of the stalk, cozy evenings in the cottage with good food and drinks, and the raw beauty of the place. Watch it here to hear our unfiltered perspectives: Ireland Fallow Buck Hunt Podcast.

Ireland is Fantastic

Hunting Fallow buck on Lambay Island was an absolute game-changer for me. The private island felt like my own wilderness paradise, with stunning ocean views and herds of deer roaming freely. My guide was spot-on, helping me stalk a majestic spotted buck with palmated antlers in just a few hours. The all-inclusive setup—cozy cottage, great meals, and even a boat ride over—made it seamless. If you’re looking for a European hunt that rivals anything in North America, this is it. Can’t wait to go back!

An Unforgettable Experience

I visited Ireland on a trip with my husband and was able to go on a stalk with him on Lambay Island.  What a beautiful gem of a location.  The views were amazing and the ride over by boat was so cool.  The lodge is in a perfect setting overlooking the ocean and there were seals playing in the port.  Our 2 guides were phenomenal and so helpful throughout the trip.  We saw so many deer and My husband was able to harvest his first Fallow buck.  It was an unforgettable experience.

Ireland Fallow Deer Hunting

Unlike the native red deer (confined mainly to specific areas like Killarney) or the more regionally concentrated sika, Ireland fallow deer have adapted remarkably well to the Island's landscapes. They prefer mixed deciduous woodlands with nearby open grazing areas, parklands, and lowland hills — habitats boosted by reforestation efforts in recent decades. This adaptability has allowed them to spread widely.

A distinctive feature of Irish fallow deer is their color variation — far more diverse than in many other wild populations. Coats range from common dark brown (most frequent in wild herds) to menil (spotted), melanistic (blackish), leucistic (pale/yellowish), and even pure white in some areas. Mature bucks develop iconic palmate antlers — broad, flattened, and sweeping upward with brow tines, spellers, and often rear-facing tines — making them visually striking trophies. Does are smaller, graceful, and lack antlers.

  • Ireland fallow deer hunting season: August 1 – April 30 (though practical hunting peaks September–February; avoid early August or late shedding periods).
  • Hunting method: Firearms only; no artificial lights, dogs, or night shooting.
  • Trophy hunts for mature bucks with impressive palmation (best mid-October to early November).
  • Sometimes we have cull or management hunts available for population control.
  • Combo packages with sika, red deer, pheasant, or other game.
  • High-success hunts on private, free range estates with consistent deer presence.
