Wisconsin Deer Hunting
Wisconsin deer hunting harvest permits and licenses are not available online, but can be purchased at a variety of businesses and locations throughout the state. Resident and nonresident licenses are available; prices vary by residency, season, bag method and special designations. Hunters need to have proof of hunter education if born after January 1, 1973.
Wisconsin Deer Hunting
- Nationally recognized as a premier whitetail hunting destination.
- Long archery hunting seasons lasting from September through early January.
- Wisconsin has nearly 6 million acres of public land.
- Non-resident licenses are available over-the-counter for nonresidents that are good for one buck and one doe.
- Just like neighboring Michigan, one great thing about Wisconsin is the low cost of deer licenses, especially for non-resident hunters. It is a much more affordable out-of-state deer hunt than many other big buck states.
- Use the DNR’s extensive online map system to locate potential spots for your next hunt.
Best Places for Deer Hunting in Wisconsin
Wisconsin has long been the No. 1 producer of giant whitetail deer, both historically and based off modern data alone. Buffalo County sits at the top of the heap, but Dane, Richland, Sauk, Shawano, Trempealeau, Vernon, Waupaca, and others are right up there too.
The state biologists estimate, forecast, and publish data on deer populations in each management unit. This provides insight that you don’t get from many other states.
Wisconsin is a World-Record Whitetail Factory
This state has long been the place for world-class typicals. It’s the go-to choice if you’re looking for the buck of a lifetime that could make the book…or break the world record. Wisconsin is a deer hunter’s destination spot that every hunter should consider for a bucket list trip at least once in their careers.
The James Jordan Buck
This one-time world record scores a whopping 206 1/8 inches. The perfect 10-pointer was harvested in Burnett County back in 1914. This stunning 5×5 still ranks No. 2 on B&C’s all-time list of typicals. It’s hard to fathom a finer 10-pointer.
The Johnny King Buck
Depending on your scoring system of choice, Wisconsin is home of the World Record typical whitetail. The Johnny King buck has caused a controversy over how typical points should be calculated. Some argue the King Buck would topple Milo Hanson’s long-standing record if it was scored “properly”.
