New Zealand Backcountry Fly Fishing

Backcountry New Zealand fly fishing trips are incredible. Explore the pristine beech forest, rivers, and towering peaks of New Zealand while you sight cast to big trout..

It’s more like “Trout Hunting” than fishing. These fish are big, old and spooky, and on top of that, there aren’t a ton of them. If you are a good caster, and you’re ready to sight fish to big, hard to catch trout, this is the trip for you.

  • Customized authentic Kiwi fly fishing experience.
  • Choose from multi-day backcountry excursions or day fish.
  • You’ll be sight fishing. This is trout hunting for brown trout up to 10 lbs and rainbows up to 7.
  • In addition to the fishing, there are many other activity options in the area such as wine tours, bungee jumping, jet boating, skydiving, scenic flights and much more. More details can be provided on request and can be fit into your itinerary.

The Fishing

This guide can help you create unique trips that will give you the most genuine experience you can dream of. They'll help you create an authentic, custom fishing itinerary that matches your budget. There is so much to see, do and experience in New Zealand, and your time is short, so too often your vacation turns into rushed tours of the top 10 sights. This trip isn’t like that at all. It’s about experiencing a true, unique connection with the land, people and culture while fly fishing along the way.

The Guides

The Naknek River is a short river only 35 miles long and winds its way through the Bristol Bay Watershed. Major points along its meandering course include the village of King Salmon and the Katmai National Park and Preserve. For fishermen, this short river offers amazing King Salmon fishing.

This is a famous river, and sometimes it gets some pressure. If this happens, you can leave the crowds behind with fly outs to all the rivers in Katmai as well as the more remote rivers on the Alaskan Peninsula!

This is a fly-out lodge and guests utilize three different airplanes to access the many different fishing locations. Situated about seven miles downstream from Naknek Lake on the Naknek River, this fly out fishing lodge sits right next to Katmai National Park and Preserve. This area contains such famous rivers as the Brooks, Moraine, Battle, Contact and Kulik to name a few. You can leave the crowds behind with fly outs to all the rivers in Katmai as well as the more remote rivers on the Alaskan Peninsula!

Jet boats stashed at various locations within our 150 mile operating radius, rafts that your guide can pack into small remote streams, as well as a fleet of jet boats that sit in front of the lodge ready to fish their home waters. This gives you the guest the option of a dynamic trip with the ability to fish new watershed each day.

Lodging

Lodging is suited to your preference and budget, you can rough it in the backcountry, or stay in a lodge.

There's a reason I keep booking this steelhead fishing trip!
Second time I’ve done this particular trip. The steelhead run was awesome! The food was even better than the first time, which is hard to imagine, and our guide is the best there is! If catching big fish is your thing I highly recommend booking through Outdoors International.

I expected big trout on this trip based on all the stories I've read over the years, and I was not disappointed! I broke my own personal best rainbow trout record at least SIX times on this trip, with the biggest being a 16 pound beauty.

I will be going again soon!
