Outdoors International offers Washington elk hunting for both distinct types of elk in the state: Rocky Mountain elk and Roosevelt elk. You’ll find Rocky Mountain elk primarily east of the Cascade Crest, while Roosevelt elk inhabit the Olympic Peninsula. In the Cascade Range, these two species often interbreed, resulting in hybrids. Rocky Mountain elk tend to be slightly smaller and lighter in color than Roosevelt elk. They also have more slender antlers with longer tines, while Roosevelt elk feature thicker, more palmated antlers.

Roosevelt Elk
Roosevelt elk, named after President Theodore Roosevelt, can be found in the Coast Range, the Olympic Range, and areas west of Interstate 5. Olympic National Park is home to the largest concentration of pure Roosevelt elk, with around 5,000 residing in the region. Outside the Olympic Mountains, most elk in western Washington are a mix of Roosevelt and Rocky Mountain elk.
Roosevelt elk have substantially smaller ranges than Rocky Mountain elk, spanning 1,500 to 4,000 acres. This is because they usually live in milder climates where food and cover are more readily available.
Rocky Mountain Elk
Rocky Mountain elk are mainly found in the mountain ranges and shrublands east of the Cascade Crest, though smaller herds have also been introduced or reestablished in parts of western Washington. The current populations of Rocky Mountain elk in Washington trace back to elk that were transplanted from Yellowstone National Park in the early 1900s.
Rocky Mountain elk typically have larger year-round ranges than Roosevelt elk, spanning 2,500 to 10,000 acres, and often migrate between distinct summer and winter locations.
