How Much to Tip a Hunting Guide

How Much to Tip a Hunting Guide

It’s customary that a hunting guide receives a gratuity from the client. While it is not required, it is very much appreciated. Guides often depend on tips as supplemental income. Hunting guides work extremely hard to make your hunt a successful and memorable experience. If you feel that your guide had a significantly positive impact on your hunt, please tip that person accordingly.

How much to tip a hunting guide.

  • Between 10-20% of the total cost of your hunt total is typically how much to tip a hunting guide.
  • The guide or outfitter and their staff will usually split the gratuity.
  • Tip in USD cash. This is because foreign banks charge a large commission to exchange checks into currency.
  • Non-hunting Observers are also encouraged to tip, although usually a lesser amount. Around 10-15% of daily observer rate split between PH and other staff members is typical for observers.

Things to consider:

  • The amount that you tip your guide usually depends on your level of satisfaction with your guide(s) and the trip.
  • A 10% to 20% tip is customary.
  • Always give cash if possible. You may not be able to access an ATM, or bank before you leave, so have your tip for your guide with you on the hunt.
  • If in a group setting with multiple guides, consider selecting a leader among the clients to organize a donation pool. Split the gratuity between the guides. Choose an appropriate time to present the gratuity, making sure all the guides are present. Divide the cash equally and present it to the guides at the same time.
  • When you’ve had numerous hunts with a particular guide, often you’ll build a strong, personal relationship. In this case your gratuity may vary from trip to trip. It may also include a useful and applicable gift. Maybe some needed equipment, a bottle of your guide’s favorite fine spirits, or other items that you have learned to be personal and appropriate.
Live like you mean it.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
Stan Masneri

What an amazing experience!

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
