Dangerous Game Hunting Trips

Africa's Big 5 and Beyond...

While Africa's Big Five and Dangerous Seven dominate the narrative, thrilling pursuits exist on other continents. These hunts often involve tracking in rugged terrain, require specialized gear, permitted outfitters. They support local economies and wildlife management, much like African safaris.

Top Destinations for Dangerous Game Hunting

Africa: The Big Five, Africa's Most Iconic Species

These five species earned their reputation because they are the hardest and most dangerous to hunt on foot.

  • Lion — The ultimate trophy and the most personal of all dangerous game hunts. Often hunted over bait or by tracking in thick cover.
  • Leopard — The ghost of the bush. Highly specialized blind or bait hunts that demand patience and precision.
  • Elephant — Massive, intelligent, and capable of vanishing in thick jesse or charging without warning. Track-and-stalk at its finest.
  • Cape Buffalo — Nicknamed “Black Death.” Known for circling back on hunters and charging at 35 mph when wounded. Many hunters say buffalo is the most dangerous of the Big Five.
  • Rhinoceros (primarily white rhino in South Africa) — A true conservation success story. Legal, tightly regulated hunts fund anti-poaching and habitat protection.

Dangerous Seven

Add hippo (the animal that kills more people in Africa than any other) and Nile crocodile for the complete dangerous-game experience. Both make excellent add-ons to buffalo or plains-game safaris.

Where to hunt Dangerous Game in Africa:

  • South Africa— The most accessible and versatile option. You can realistically pursue all of the Big Five (or Dangerous Seven) on a single safari, often combining them with excellent plains game. Private game reserves and conservancies offer superb trophies and first-class lodges.
  • Zimbabwe— Classic, vast concessions with huge buffalo herds and excellent leopard and lion opportunities. Some of the oldest and most respected dangerous-game outfitters in Africa operate here.
  • Tanzania— True wilderness safaris in massive blocks. Lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo in remote, unspoiled country. Requires an additional dangerous-game permit.
  • Mozambique— Affordable, wild, and remote (especially the Cahora Bassa region). Outstanding buffalo, leopard, elephant, hippo, and crocodile in low-pressure areas.
  • Other strong optionsZambia (Luangwa Valley) and Namibia (Caprivi/Zambezi Region) for buffalo and hippo/crocodile.

North America: Rugged, Accessible Adventures

Home to the "Big Five of North America" (grizzly/brown bear, moose, bison, mountain goat, bighorn sheep)—species that demand skill and respect due to their power and habitats.

  • Grizzly/Brown Bear: True dangerous game—up to 1,500 lbs, 35 mph charges, especially protective sows. Spring/fall spot-and-stalk or bait hunts test nerve in dense cover. Alaska limits non-residents to guided hunts; even/odd year cycles protect boars. Top spots: Alaska's Kodiak (coastal browns up to 10 ft), Yukon interiors. Combine with salmon fishing for downtime.
  • Polar Bear: Extreme cold adds danger; 1,700-lb beasts with territorial ambushes. Community hunts with Inuit guides emphasize cultural respect and fund conservation. Nunavut quotas tight—book with our outfitters to beat the draw. Not for novices; prep for -40°F temps.
  • American Bison: 2,000+ lbs of unpredictable power; wounded bulls charge like Cape buffalo. Ranch hunts accessible, public land draws challenging. Montana/Wyoming focus on herd management—permits via lottery. Destinations: Yellowstone-area ranches, Alberta. Affordable entry.
  • Moose: 1,800-lb rutting bulls gore or trample; largest antlered game. Calling in thick bush amps risk. Alaska/Newfoundland seasons Sept–Oct; non-res tags required. Horseback/bush plane/boat access key.
  • Mountain Lion (Cougar): Stealthy 200-lb cats with lethal pounces. Hound hunts or spot-stalk in snow. Western U.S. for affordability.

Polar Bear Hunting

Asia: Remote, Exotic Challenges

Visa-heavy but rewarding for collectors seeking unique trophies.

  • Asiatic Brown Bear: Grizzly kin—fast, territorial in forests. Similar risks; bait or stalk. Russia limits exports, but booking with us solves that problem; Pakistan combos with ibex under strict quotas. Kamchatka for big boars.

Europe: Traditional, Driven Hunts

Year-round options with cultural flair; milder than NA extremes.

  • Wild Boar: 25 mph charges, razor tusks; packs turn hunts chaotic. Driven or night-vision ops thrilling. Germany/Spain unlimited in places; Romania for big trophies. Belarus adds boar with bison. Eco-tourism bundles.
  • European Brown Bear: Unpredictable 800-lb bruisers. Bait hunts in forests. Croatia/Romania/Sweden: Quotas protect populations; bookings open now.
  • Bonus: European Bison/Wolf: Belarus for free-range bison; Macedonia wolf/boar mixes.

Australia/Oceania: Feral Thrills Down Under

Affordable intro to DG; no jet lag for West Coasters.

  • Water Buffalo: Feral 2,000-lb beasts like Cape buffs—herd charges common. ATV/foot stalks in tropics. Northern Territory/PNG: Year-round; regs emphasize culling invasives.
  • Banteng: 1,800-lb wild cattle with goring horns; aggressive in jungles. Track-and-stalk like buffalo. Indonesia/Cambodia: Introduced pops sustainable; wet-season hunts.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
Stan Masneri
