The majestic waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) is a large antelope species found in sub-Saharan Africa. Renowned for its distinct physical features and remarkable resilience, the waterbuck is a prized trophy among hunters. Let us explore some key characteristics of this magnificent creature:

Appearance: The waterbuck is easily recognizable by its shaggy, reddish-brown coat and a unique white ring encircling its rump. The males, or bulls, are significantly larger than the females, or cows, and often sport impressive curved horns.
Habitat: Waterbucks inhabit grassy plains, marshes, and savannas close to water sources such as rivers, lakes, and swamps. They are well-adapted to semi-aquatic environments, with a special oily secretion that acts as a waterproofing agent.
Behavior: These majestic creatures are primarily grazers, feeding on grasses and reeds near water bodies. Waterbucks are known for their alertness and exceptional hearing, making them a challenging quarry for hunters. Their strong herding instincts also mean they are rarely encountered alone.

What an amazing experience!

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
