Vervet Monkey hunting

Vervet Monkey Hunting

Vervet Monkeys inhabit regions spanning from East Africa to the eastern shores of Southern Africa. Their habitat encompasses open woodlands, coastal forests, forest edges, and riverine environments. Despite their endearing appearance, these primates pose a significant challenge for farmers engaged in crop production and urban residents whose homes are subject to raids. Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, and South Africa offer opportunities for hunting Vervet Monkeys. On private lands and within numerous hunting camps, these creatures are often regarded as pests, allowing hunters to pursue them without charge. However, if intending to export the animals, field preparation is necessary, and a trophy fee might be applicable.

In South Africa and Zimbabwe, Vervet Monkeys can be hunted throughout the year. Mozambique, on the other hand, restricts hunting to the season running from April 1 to November 30. Similarly, Zambia and Tanzania only permit hunting of Monkeys during specific periods, with Tanzania's season spanning from July to December and Zambia's from May until the end of November.

Hunting Methods

Typically, Monkeys can be hunted opportunistically at any time of day. In their natural habitat, it is common to find them basking in the sunlight on the edge of a branch during chilly winter mornings. They often congregate near water sources during the heat of the day. Within camp areas, where Monkeys can become bothersome by pilfering food from kitchens or guests' rooms, numerous individuals have been shot. Spot-and-stalk hunting is usually effective. However, exercising patience is crucial when targeting crop-raiding Monkeys, as they have grown wary due to regular encounters with hunters. Bowhunters seeking trophies should consider using blinds positioned near watering holes.

Professional Hunters often encourage shooting Vervet Monkeys to address issues related to nuisance animals in their camps or to assist farmers in protecting their crops from these persistent primate troops. Hunting Monkeys engaged in crop raiding can prove exceedingly challenging, as these creatures scatter rapidly at the slightest indication of danger. Nevertheless, the resulting full mount trophies are truly impressive.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.
