Caracal Hunting

Caracal Hunts

Before diving into the details of our caracal hunting experience, let's take a moment to appreciate the fascinating characteristics of these remarkable creatures. The caracal, also known as the "desert lynx," is a medium-sized wild cat that roams the African savannah with elegance and stealth. Its distinct tufted ears and slender body make it a true sight to behold.

Caracal hunting is legal in Ethiopia, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

There isn’t a best time when Caracal hunting is better than at other times. The small feline is usually hunted in the course of a general ‘plains game’ hunt. Opportunities for such hunts exist all year in South Africa, and from March to November elsewhere. Most people prefer summer months, which are winter in the Southern Hemisphere, when the weather is more comfortable for hunting.

How to Hunt Caracal

The problem with Caracal hunting is that a big male animal controls a very large territory, and success depends on the PH knowing precisely what parts of the territory the tom prefers. Baiting is not always effective, because the Caracal prefers the prey it killed itself, so it’s best to wait over a fresh kill.

Caracal tends to be mostly nocturnal, and if legal, calling at night, with night sights or artificial light, is perhaps the most efficient way of Caracal hunting. Some South African outfitters hold a special license for and specialize in such hunts. Finally, in South Africa, where you don’t need to have a Caracal license at hand before the hunt, the cat can be hunted if an opportunity presents itself. In fact, one of the biggest Caracal trophies in South Africa was killed as the cat killed the antelope the hunter was stalking before the hunter’s eyes.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you, Stan Masneri

Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
