Located in the South Pacific equidistant between Hawaii and New Zealand sits Kiritimati Island – the largest atoll in the world that today is known to anglers as Christmas Island. It takes a bit of time to get here, but once you arrive, you find a saltwater wilderness area that is absolutely massive: an area that is home to impressive numbers of desirable gamefish species. The interior and exterior flats of Christmas Island are a mix of hard white sand, coral and turtle grass, creating the ideal setting for wade fishing enthusiasts.

Premier Fly Fishing Destination:

  • Species include bonefish; trigger fish; trevally; tuna; sweetlips; red bass and snappers.
  • Bonefish are the target species, and they average two to three pounds.
  • The presence and availability of giant trevally for the flats fishing angler makes this fly fishing destination special. The guides know where to find feeding trevally on the flats, and, a well-placed fly will get it done most of the time.
  • The consistent weather of Christmas Island allows anglers a year round opportunity to fish miles and miles of wade-able sand and coral flats.

Outdoors International can tailor fishing-focused trips with rustic lodges and local guides, blending adventure with Kiribati’s untouched charm. Explore coral reefs, snorkeling turquoise lagoons, or go birdwatching for rare seabirds like the Christmas Island frigatebird. If you’re looking for a great first-time flats trip or a destination that will deliver impressive numbers, then a Christmas Island fly fishing trip should be high on the list.

Live like you mean it.

TRIP REPORTS  |  BOOK A TRIP

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
Stan Masneri

What an amazing experience!

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
