New Mexico Unit 5B

Overview

New Mexico Unit 5B is known for its challenging terrain and excellent opportunities for elk and mule deer hunting. Situated in the northern part of the state, this unit offers a mix of piñon-juniper woodlands, ponderosa pine forests, and open meadows, making it a prime habitat for both elk and deer populations. With elevations ranging from 6,500 to 8,500 feet, hunters will encounter diverse landscapes that require strategic planning and adaptability.

Elk Hunting in Unit 5B

Unit 5B has a reputation for producing quality bulls, especially during the archery and rifle seasons. Elk hunting here is particularly fruitful during the rut, where the combination of dense cover and open areas allows for effective calling and spot-and-stalk strategies. Hunters familiar with glassing will find limited opportunities in some sections due to thick vegetation, but areas like Mesa Prieta offer better visibility for those looking to locate trophy bulls from a distance.

Mule Deer Hunting

In addition to its elk population, Unit 5B supports a healthy mule deer population. The terrain’s varied vegetation creates ideal conditions for mule deer to thrive, particularly in the transitional zones between the dense forests and more open foothills. Deer hunters should focus on early morning and late evening movements, when mule deer are most active.

Scouting and Preparation

Due to the unit's rugged terrain, effective scouting is critical. Using tools like OnyX maps and Google Earth, along with physical pre-season scouting trips, can make a significant difference in identifying key water sources and game trails. Given the unpredictable weather in the fall, being well-prepared with proper gear and an understanding of animal movements based on weather patterns will increase your chances of success.

In summary, New Mexico Unit 5B is a destination for seasoned hunters who are looking for a rewarding challenge. With its combination of quality elk and mule deer hunting opportunities, strategic scouting, and understanding the diverse terrain are key to a successful hunt in this rugged unit.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you, Stan Masneri
