Alaska Hunting Trips

Guided, Unguided, and Trapping Opportunities

Explore Alaska's vast wilderness for unforgettable hunting experiences. From big game pursuits in the Brooks Range to trapping furbearers along remote rivers, our listings cover guided and unguided options for all skill levels. Non-residents note: Guides are required for certain species (e.g., brown bear, Dall sheep, mountain goat). Seasons typically run August–April; check ADFG for exact dates and bag limits.

Guided Hunting Trips

Professional guides handle logistics, scouting, and compliance. Expect higher success rates and potentially trophy quality as well on a guided hunts. Guides must be licensed by ADFG.

Unguided (DIY) Hunting Trips

For experienced hunters seeking independence. Use air taxis for drop-offs; manage your own gear and extraction. Cheaper but requires strong backcountry skills. Residents and non-residents can go unguided for most species except those requiring guides.

  • Drop-Off Unguided Hunts: Fly-in or float trips to remote areas for caribou or moose, Sitka blacktail, and black bears. Add wolf/wolverine at no extra tag fee.
  • Float Trips and River Hunts: Raft down rivers for black bear or small game. Fishing add-ons common.
  • Self-Guided Small Game: Hunt hare, squirrel, or birds on public lands with minimal setup.

Hunts by Species

Target specific game with tailored trips. Bag limits vary by unit (e.g., Unit 18 vs. 26A); seals required for some (e.g., wolf, wolverine).

  • Bear (Brown/Grizzly, Black): Spring/fall seasons. Guided mandatory for non-residents on brown bears; unguided possible for black bears.
  • Ungulates (Moose, Caribou, Dall Sheep, Mountain Goat): Migration-based hunts. Sheep and goat require guides for non-residents; unguided caribou drops popular.
  • Other Big Game (Bison, Elk, Deer, Muskox): Limited draws; guided options for muskox in Arctic units.
  • Predators (Wolf, Wolverine): No bag limits in many areas; take during denning season prohibited in preserves. Unguided common.
  • Small Game (Hare, Squirrel, Marmot): Year-round in some units; unguided and low-cost.
  • Birds (Waterfowl, Upland, Ptarmigan): Fall migrations; guided for decoy hunts, unguided for walk-ups.

Types of Hunting

Alaska offers diverse methods across terrains. All hunts follow ADFG rules (e.g., no swimming big game from boats under power in some areas).

  • Big Game Hunting: Rifle, bow, or muzzleloader for trophies. Spot-and-stalk or stand hunting.
  • Small Game Hunting: Shotguns for quick pursuits; includes ground squirrels and hares.
  • Waterfowl Hunting: Blinds and calls for ducks/geese; subsistence regs apply in some regions.
  • Upland Bird Hunting: Walking hunts for ptarmigan/grouse; dogs allowed.
  • Archery-Only or Primitive Weapon Hunts: Restricted zones for added challenge.

Trapping Opportunities

Trapping targets furbearers for pelts or management. Requires separate license; methods include snares, foothold traps, or body-grip. Seasons Nov–Apr; no disturbing dens. Can combine with hunting (e.g., wolf under hunting or trapping regs).

  • Guided Trapping Trips: Rare, but outfitters offer mentored sessions for beginners.
  • Unguided Trapping: DIY on public lands; focus on beaver dams or marten runs.
  • Key Species: Beaver, coyote, fox (Arctic/red), fisher, lynx, marten, mink, muskrat, otter, weasel, wolf, wolverine.
  • Regulations Note: Separate bag limits from hunting; sealing required for otter, wolf, wolverine.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
Stan Masneri

What an amazing experience!

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
