Rio Grande Turkey Hunts

Master the Plains Longbeards

The Rio Grande wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia) dominates the Southern Great Plains and Southwest, thriving in mesquite brush, live oak motts, river bottoms, agricultural fields, and open grasslands. These birds stand out with their long, thick beards (often 10+ inches), sharp 1–1.75+ inch spurs, and heavy body weights (mature toms frequently 20–25+ lbs). They're vocal early season, travel in large flocks, and love strutting in open areas—creating explosive, visual hunts.

Vetted Outfitters

Rio Grandes are pressured in popular areas but respond well to smart setups on low-pressure private land. A guided hunt gives you the edge: access to ranches with roost trees, strut zones, and food sources that keep birds concentrated. Perfect for your first Rio, adding to a Slam, or chasing a true brush-country giant.

We’ve been on these hunts ourselves and they have our stamp of approval. Outdoors International can help you stack the odds in your favor for a more successful turkey hunt. Let us know if you'd like to schedule a turkey hunting consultation.

Hunting Turkeys in Texas

Fun Hunting in Texas

I’ve hunted in Texas since 2009, and I would say this ranch is the best I’ve been at to date. The hospitality of the guide and cook was world class. They were eager to make sure we had the best hunt possible. I look forward in booking another hunt on this Texas turkey hunting ranch.

Rio Grande turkeys are found in the mid to southern Great Plains, from southern Texas, north into Oklahoma, Kansas and southern Nebraska. In the Western United States, they have been introduced into central and western California, western Oregon, and parts of Washington. In the late 1950s, they were also introduced into several of the Hawaiian Islands.

Why Choose Guided Rio Grande Turkey Hunts?

  • Exclusive Ranch Access — Thousands of acres of managed private property with minimal hunting pressure and high turkey numbers.
  • Consistent Success — Many outfitters deliver 80–95%+ opportunity on mature gobblers, often multiple birds per group.
  • Proven Tactics — Guides excel at ground blinds, pop-up setups, decoy spreads, and running & gunning across senderos and river corridors.
  • Value-Added Packages — Comfortable ranch lodging, home-cooked meals, field transport (often UTVs), and combo potential (e.g., turkey + axis deer, hogs, or varmints).

Top Destinations for Rio Grande Turkey Hunting

Rio Grande turkeys are found in the mid to southern Great Plains, from southern Texas, north into Oklahoma, Kansas and southern Nebraska. In the Western United States, they have been introduced into central and western California, western Oregon, and parts of Washington. In the late 1950s, they were also introduced into several of the Hawaiian Islands. Rio Grandes excel in these core states:

  • Texas — The heart of Rio country: South Texas brush, Hill Country oaks, and Panhandle plains; longest seasons and big birds.
  • Oklahoma — Rolling prairies, river bottoms, and ag fields with dense populations and excellent public/private mix.
  • Kansas — Open wheat country and CRP edges producing heavy, long-spurred toms.
  • New Mexico — Western edge with mesa country and hybrid zones (Rio/Merriam's potential).

Seasons run mid-March through May (earliest in South Texas), with most guided packages 3–5 days fully outfitted in spring. Fall hunts available in select areas.

What to Expect on Your Hunt

Roost birds at dusk, set up pre-dawn in blinds or natural cover. Expect booming gobbles from the roost, fly-downs into fields, and birds charging decoys across open ground. Guides handle calling, positioning, and shot opportunities while you focus on the rush.

Pro Tips for Rio Grande Success

  • Use aggressive calling early; these birds often shock gobble and charge decoys.
  • Set up on field edges or senderos—visibility is your friend.
  • Pattern for 40+ yard shots; many opportunities come in open terrain.
  • Bring sunscreen and bug spray—Southern Plains weather can be intense.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
Stan Masneri

What an amazing experience!

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
