Rio Grande Turkey Hunts
Master the Plains Longbeards
The Rio Grande wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia) dominates the Southern Great Plains and Southwest, thriving in mesquite brush, live oak motts, river bottoms, agricultural fields, and open grasslands. These birds stand out with their long, thick beards (often 10+ inches), sharp 1–1.75+ inch spurs, and heavy body weights (mature toms frequently 20–25+ lbs). They're vocal early season, travel in large flocks, and love strutting in open areas—creating explosive, visual hunts.
