Top Destinations for Rio Grande Turkey Hunting

Rio Grande turkeys are found in the mid to southern Great Plains, from southern Texas, north into Oklahoma, Kansas and southern Nebraska. In the Western United States, they have been introduced into central and western California, western Oregon, and parts of Washington. In the late 1950s, they were also introduced into several of the Hawaiian Islands. Rio Grandes excel in these core states:

• Texas — The heart of Rio country: South Texas brush, Hill Country oaks, and Panhandle plains; longest seasons and big birds.
• Oklahoma — Rolling prairies, river bottoms, and ag fields with dense populations and excellent public/private mix.
• Kansas — Open wheat country and CRP edges producing heavy, long-spurred toms.
• New Mexico — Western edge with mesa country and hybrid zones (Rio/Merriam's potential).

Seasons run mid-March through May (earliest in South Texas), with most guided packages 3–5 days fully outfitted in spring. Fall hunts available in select areas.

What to Expect on Your Hunt

Roost birds at dusk, set up pre-dawn in blinds or natural cover. Expect booming gobbles from the roost, fly-downs into fields, and birds charging decoys across open ground. Guides handle calling, positioning, and shot opportunities while you focus on the rush.
