The Eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) is North America's most widespread and abundant turkey subspecies, thriving across 38+ states east of the Mississippi and beyond through transplants. These birds are known for their impressive size (mature toms often 20-25+ lbs), long beards, thick spurs, and thunderous gobbles that echo through hardwood ridges, river bottoms, and mixed agricultural timber.

We had action every morning—gobbles shaking the woods at fly-down, birds strutting in close, the whole classic Eastern experience. I tagged a beautiful 24-lb tom on day two, and my buddy filled his tag the next morning. Comfortable lodging, great food, and zero pressure—just pure turkey hunting. I’m already planning next spring.

This turkey lives in the most diverse of environments and habitat; from the south-east hardwood forests and pastures, to the northern woods.
They have chestnut-brown tips on tail feathers, with white and black bars on the wings. Eastern turkeys have VERY long beards, making them a great trophy. Seasons typically run mid-March through May (varies by state), with most outfitters offering 3-5 day fully guided spring packages. Fall hunts available in select areas.
