Eastern Turkey Hunts

Pursue the King of Longbeards

The Eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) is North America's most widespread and abundant turkey subspecies, thriving across 38+ states east of the Mississippi and beyond through transplants. These birds are known for their impressive size (mature toms often 20-25+ lbs), long beards, thick spurs, and thunderous gobbles that echo through hardwood ridges, river bottoms, and mixed agricultural timber.

Vetted Outfitters

Eastern gobblers are notoriously challenging – smart, wary, and pressured in many areas – making a successful hunt with a proven outfitter a game-changer. Whether you're chasing your first bird, adding to your Grand Slam, or after a trophy longbeard, our guided Eastern turkey hunts deliver access to high-density private properties, expert calling, and consistent opportunity.

They have the loudest gobbles of all of the subspecies of wild turkey, however, they're tough to call in...second only to Florida's Osceola.

We’ve been on these hunts ourselves and they have our stamp of approval. Outdoors International can help you stack the odds in your favor for a more successful turkey hunt. Let us know if you'd like to schedule a turkey hunting consultation.

One of the Best Hunts of My Life

We had action every morning—gobbles shaking the woods at fly-down, birds strutting in close, the whole classic Eastern experience. I tagged a beautiful 24-lb tom on day two, and my buddy filled his tag the next morning. Comfortable lodging, great food, and zero pressure—just pure turkey hunting. I’m already planning next spring.

Eastern wild turkeys are the most widely distributed subspecies east of the Mississippi River.

This subspecies is also the most abundant of all the subspecies. In fact, they are hunted in 38 states and numerous Canadian provinces. The southern range is from northern Florida west to eastern Texas and the northern range is from New England and southern Canada west to Minnesota. The Eastern Wild Turkey has also been introduced into some of the Midwestern and  western states such as Kansas, northern California, Oregon, Washington and also into Ontario. This turkey lives in the most diverse of environments and habitat; from the south-east hardwood forests and pastures, to the northern woods.

They have chestnut-brown tips on tail feathers, with white and black bars on the wings. Eastern turkeys have VERY long beards, making them a great trophy. Why Choose Guided Eastern Turkey Hunts?

  • Prime Access — Thousands of acres of managed private land with roost sites, strut zones, and food sources that public hunters rarely touch.
  • High Success Rates — Many of our partner outfitters report 80-90%+ opportunity on mature gobblers during prime spring seasons.
  • Expert Guidance — Professional callers who know local birds, patterns, and tactics (running & gunning, blind setups, aggressive vs. patient calling).
  • All-Inclusive Packages — Comfortable lodging, meals, field transportation, and often combo hunts (e.g., spring turkey + hog or fall options where available).

Top Destinations for Eastern Turkey Hunting

Eastern turkeys dominate the landscape in these powerhouse states:
  • Missouri — Legendary for big, vocal birds in rolling Ozarks and river bottoms; excellent public & private options.
  • Alabama — Deep Southern tradition with long seasons and challenging, pressured gobblers.
  • Kentucky & Tennessee — Rolling hills, hardwoods, and ag fields supporting dense populations.
  • Illinois & Kansas — Record harvests and hybrid zones for bonus Rios/Easterns.
  • Northeast (NY, PA, etc.) — Forested mosaics with strong birds and late seasons.

Seasons typically run mid-March through May (varies by state), with most outfitters offering 3-5 day fully guided spring packages. Fall hunts available in select areas.

What to Expect on Your Hunt

Arrive, scout, roost birds the evening before. Early mornings start with fly-down setups, soft hen talk, and waiting for that first thunderous gobble. Guides handle calling, decoy placement, and shot opportunities while you focus on the thrill.

Our team of professional consultants are ready to help you research, book and plan an amazing trip with one of our amazing outfitter partners around the world.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
Stan Masneri

What an amazing experience!

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
