Whether you're adding a wolf tag to an elk or caribou hunt or focusing on predator calling, our consultants handle the regulations and logistics so you can focus on the challenge. Book through us at the same price as direct – with expert guidance included.

Vetted Outfitters

We’ve been on these hunts ourselves and they have our stamp of approval. If you're ready to plan your adventure, contact us for personalized packages.

At Outdoors International, we rigorously vet our outfitters through a multi-step process that includes in-depth background checks, on-site evaluations, verification of licenses and insurance, and references from past clients to ensure they meet our high standards for safety, ethics, and success rates. Annually, we require detailed reports from each outfitter covering operational updates, hunt statistics, and compliance with regulations, allowing us to maintain transparency and adapt partnerships as needed. Additionally, we collect post-hunt feedback directly from our clients via automated surveys sent immediately after their trips, aggregating this data to refine outfitter performance metrics and inform future recommendations—helping us build a data-driven business that minimizes risks and maximizes client satisfaction.

Tyson with an Idaho wolf

A Special Day in Idaho

...we both saw it and ran to the tent to grab a rifle knowing we both had a wolf tag in our back pockets. I started barking at the wolf once I had shouldered the rifle and had her in the sight picture. Boom! "Did you get it?" I answered, "yes." I headed the direction of the shot to find the most beautiful wolf I had ever seen. I stood in awe of her for a couple of seconds. Hunting in Idaho will now and forever be an even more special day for me.

Wolf hunting demands skill, patience, and deep knowledge of the animal's behavior – it's not for the faint of heart. Wolves are intelligent, territorial, and elusive, with keen senses that make them a true test for any hunter. Success often comes from understanding their habits, like nocturnal activity and pack dynamics, and using proven methods in regulated areas. Outdoors International specializes in linking you with licensed and vetted outfitters. Note: Wolf hunting is illegal in most of the Lower 48 U.S. states due to Endangered Species Act protections – we focus exclusively on legal zones.

Top Destinations for Wolf Hunting Trips

We curate opportunities in prime, legally sanctioned areas. Here's a breakdown of key spots:

  • Alaska, USA: Vast wilderness with state-managed seasons. Hunts in Alaska often combine with moose or caribou, using spot-and-stalk or calling in remote backcountry. Expect harsh conditions and high adventure – tags are over-the-counter in many units.
  • Canada (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Yukon, Northwest Territories): Diverse terrains from forests to tundra. Methods vary by province: baiting allowed in some (like BC for winter hunts), calling and trapping in others. Yukon and NWT offer Arctic expeditions where wolves follow caribou migrations. In Ontario, we offer a semi-driven wolf hunt.
  • International Options (Where Legal): For advanced hunters, we explore regulated hunts in Europe (e.g., Spain, Romania) or Asia (e.g., Russia, Kazakhstan). These require CITES permits for pelt export – we vet partners for compliance.

Combination hunts are popular: Always grab a wolf tag on elk, deer, or bear hunts, as opportunistic shots arise when wolves pressure big game.

Wolf Hunting Strategies and Tips

Drawing from expert insights like those in our podcast "Wolf Hunting 101" with seasoned hunter Brent Martell (who's harvested seven wolves with bow and rifle), here's practical advice to boost your success:

  • Finding Wolves: Look for sign like tracks, scat, or howling points. Wolves are territorial – use yip howls or coyote calls to exploit this. In elk country, switch to wolf mode if predators are competing for your quarry.
  • Calling Techniques: Start aggressive with rabbit distress calls (1-2 minutes on, then pause). For close encounters, try lip squeaks. After a shot, mimic a hurt pup whine to draw in pack mates. Patience is key – responses can take 30-60 minutes as wolves approach cautiously from afar.
  • Setup and Gear: Choose high ground with good visibility and cover. Hunt dawn/dusk when active. No baiting in Idaho/Montana (game species rules), but it's an option in parts of Canada. Pack a reliable long-range rifle; practice for rare opportunities.
  • Ethics and Prep: Wolves react warily after a pack member is shot – stay still and use barks for follow-ups. Public perception matters; hunt responsibly to support conservation.

As Brent notes: "It’s no secret wolves like to howl. Combine that with their fierce territorial behavior, and you’ve got a recipe that can put a whole pack of wolves in your lap." Listen to the full podcast for more on pressured elk hunts and decoy use.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
Stan Masneri
