Gould's Turkey Hunts

The Ultimate Challenge: Hunt the Largest Wild Turkey

Needed for the Wild Turkey Royal Slam, the Gould’s turkey is the largest of the 5 subspecies and somewhat resembles the Merriam’s turkey. They have longer legs, larger feet, and larger center tail feathers than any of the other wild turkey subspecies in North America. Gould’s differ by having distinctive white tips on the tail feathers and tail rump coverts which usually separate to show an “eyelash” appearance. Lower back and rump feathers have copper and greenish-golden reflections, not like the faintly iridescent velvety black found on the Merriam’s. Gould’s body plumage is said to be somewhat blue-green in coloration. Adult females have a less pronounced metallic greenish and reddish sheen and are more purplish.

Vetted Outfitters

The Gould's wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo mexicana) is the rarest and largest of North America's six subspecies, with long legs, massive body size (toms often 25+ lbs), thick beards, sharp spurs, and distinctive wide tail fans tipped in bright white. They inhabit remote, high-elevation "sky island" mountains, oak woodlands, pine-oak forests, and steep canyons – making them a bucket-list bird for serious hunters chasing the Royal Slam (all five U.S. subspecies) or World Slam.

We’ve been on these hunts ourselves and they have our stamp of approval. Outdoors International can help you stack the odds in your favor for a more successful turkey hunt. Let us know if you'd like to schedule a turkey hunting consultation.

Gould's Wild Turkey Hunting in Mexico

Completed My Royal Slam

After chasing all five U.S. subspecies for years, Gould's was the final piece—and Mexico delivered beyond expectations. The ranch was massive, birds everywhere, and the toms were absolute monsters: long legs, thick beards over 11 inches, and those signature wide white-tipped fans that look unreal up close. I'm already telling friends to book for next spring.

Why Choose Guided Gould's Turkey Hunts?

  • Exclusive Access — Vast private ranches in Mexico (often 100,000+ acres) or limited Arizona units with low pressure and high densities.
  • Near-100% Success — Reputable outfitters report 95–100% harvest rates, especially on shotgun hunts in Mexico; many allow two-bird limits.
  • Expert Mountain Guides — Pros who know elevations (4,500–9,800+ ft), roost patterns, glassing, running & gunning, or blind setups in oak/pine country.
  • All-Inclusive & Memorable — Comfortable ranch lodging, meals, transport (horses/UTVs), and breathtaking Sierra Madre scenery; often combo potential (e.g., with Coues deer or varmints).

Top Destinations for Gould's Turkey Hunting

  • Mexico (Sonora & Chihuahua) — Primary range with abundant birds, generous seasons (March–May), and proven high-success ranches.
  • Arizona — Limited-draw tags (lottery, apply early); sky island mountains with reintroduced populations; seasons typically May.
  • New Mexico — Small border populations; very limited opportunities, often draw-based.

Mexico dominates for reliability and volume; U.S. hunts are trophy-focused but tag-limited.

What to Expect on Your Hunt

Scout roosts evenings prior, set up pre-dawn in blinds or stalk ridges at first light. Expect powerful gobbles echoing through canyons, big birds strutting dusty trails, and long-distance setups in open oak woodlands. Guides position you for clean shots while you experience true wilderness.

Pro Tips for Gould's Success

  • Prepare for elevation and rough terrain—good boots, layering, and physical conditioning are essential.
  • Use conservative calling; these birds respond to soft yelps/purrs but can be spooky in open country.
  • Pattern for longer shots (40+ yards possible); many hunts involve glassing and stalking.
  • Apply early for Arizona tags—odds improve with bonus points.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
Stan Masneri

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
