Red Stag HuntsThe red stag — known across Europe and beyond as one of the most iconic and sought-after big game animals — offers hunters a pursuit steeped in tradition, challenge, and breathtaking natural scenery. Whether you dream of stalking through the misty moorlands of the Scottish Highlands, pursuing free-range stags across the vast pampas of Argentina, or tracking trophy animals through the rugged terrain of New Zealand, a red stag hunt delivers an experience unlike any other in the world of hunting. What Is a Red Stag? The red stag is the male of the red deer (Cervus elaphus), one of the largest deer species in the world. Prized for their impressive, multi-pointed antlers, red stags are powerful, wary animals that demand skilled, patient hunting. Their antlers are scored using established trophy scoring systems — in Scotland, for example, the CIC trophy scoring system is the standard used to evaluate harvested animals.Where Can You Hunt Red Stag? Our outfitter works across several premier red stag destinations worldwide. Each offers a distinct landscape, hunting method, and cultural experience.Scottish Highlands, Scotland: The rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands, with its mountains, lochs, and moorlands, provides one of the most traditional and atmospheric red stag hunting experiences available anywhere. Scotland is famous for its thriving red deer population, and hunting here means immersing yourself in centuries of stalking tradition. Hunters typically pursue stags on foot across open hillsides, working with an experienced stalker to close the distance on these sharp-eyed animals. Your guide will assess stags in the field, identifying animals that are appropriate to harvest — often those with broken, mangled, or otherwise non-typical antlers — while carefully protecting the finest breeding stags for the future of the herd.Argentina: Argentina offers exceptional free-range red stag hunting across sweeping, open landscapes. Physically, these hunts tend to be manageable for a wide range of hunters. Your guide will work closely with you throughout the experience, and the combination of great food, comfortable accommodations, and outstanding hunting makes Argentina a favorite destination for returning hunters.New Zealand: New Zealand has earned a reputation as a world-class red stag destination. Hunts here are well-organized, with professional guides, excellent lodging, and stunning scenery. The terrain can be moderately demanding, but the quality of the experience — from the animals encountered to the hospitality provided — consistently earns high praise from hunters who make the trip. What to Expect in the FieldRed stag hunting is an active, immersive pursuit. Depending on your destination, you should be prepared for the following:Foot stalking: Much of a red stag hunt is conducted on foot, often covering significant ground across varied terrain to locate and approach animals undetected.Glassing and assessment: Your guide will spend considerable time glassing hillsides and valleys, carefully evaluating stags before committing to a stalk.Close-range shots: Shots can vary widely depending on terrain. In the Scottish Highlands, for example, hunters may find themselves shooting from elevated ridgelines or unusual positions at close range — demanding a calm, practiced approach to marksmanship.Trophy selectivity: On many red stag hunts, your guide plays a critical role in identifying which animals are appropriate to harvest. This selective approach supports sound wildlife management and the long-term health of the deer population.Physical preparation: While some red stag hunts are rated as physically easy to moderate, the nature of stalking across open country means that a baseline level of fitness will enhance your experience significantly. The Hunting TraditionHunting in Europe and beyond is an experience steeped in tradition. From the formal protocols of Highland deer stalking in Scotland to the open-range pursuits of Argentina and New Zealand, red stag hunting connects hunters to landscapes and customs with deep historical roots. The animals themselves — majestic, powerful, and alert — make every successful hunt a deeply memorable achievement.Plan Your Red Stag HuntOur consultants are ready to help you find the red stag hunt that matches your goals, physical ability, and preferred destination. We're looking forward to helping you book a great trip with an amazing outfitter.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
Stan Masneri

What an amazing experience!

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
