Persistence Pays Off

My guide was key to the success of the hunt. He never gave up, or let me get down, and on the last day of my hunt a bear seemed to materialize out of nowhere and he expertly maneuvered us into position to harvest a beautiful Brown Bear.

We Will Be Back

All around a great lodge.  We saw so many brown bears! They know how to help you if you can’t take tough terrain. The bears are very nice. After field judging quite a few, we killed two nice boars. A 9 foot, 3-incher and a 8 foot, maybe-incher.

About Brown Bears: The Apex Predator

Brown bears (Ursus arctos) are among the largest land carnivores, with mature males often weighing 500-900 lbs and up to 1,400 lbs in exceptional cases. Known for their speed, agility, and intelligence, these bears inhabit diverse ecosystems from coastal regions to inland forests. Subspecies include the coastal Alaskan brown bear (often called Kodiak bears for those on the island), Amur, Siberian, Kamchatka, and Eurasian varieties in Russia. Their diet shifts seasonally, from emerging vegetation in spring to salmon runs in fall, influencing hunting strategies. Hunting brown bears demands respect for conservation—always prioritizing mature boars to support healthy populations.

Prime Locations for Brown Bear Hunts

The best brown bear hunting occurs in remote, coastal areas where abundant food sources support trophy-sized animals.

  • Alaska: Focus on Kodiak Island and the Alaska Peninsula for world-class opportunities. These regions boast dense populations with bears squaring 9-10 feet or more. Guided hunts here are mandatory for non-residents, emphasizing safety and success.
  • Russia: Home to four subspecies (Amur, Siberian, Kamchatka, Eurasian), offering diverse terrains from volcanic Kamchatka to Siberian taiga. Hunts here provide a cultural adventure alongside big game pursuits.
  • Other Regions: Limited options in Canada, Eastern Europe, and Asia, often in wilderness areas with strict quotas.

Our outfitters handle logistics, from permits to remote access, so you can focus on the hunt.

Hunting Seasons and Regulations

Timing your hunt is crucial for success and compliance.

Season Typical Dates Key Advantages Considerations
Spring April-May (e.g., April 1-May 15 in Kodiak) Bears emerge from hibernation, targeting large males; longer daylight hours. Fur may be patchy; colder weather.
Fall September-November (e.g., Oct 25-Nov 30 in Kodiak; late August-November in some areas) Thicker hides; bears fattening up near salmon streams. Shorter days; potential for rain or snow.

Regulations vary by location:

  • Alaska: Non-residents must use a licensed guide. Bag limit: 1 bear every 4 regulatory years in many units. No harvesting cubs or sows with cubs.
  • Russia and Others: Quotas, permits, and export rules apply. Hunts often 10-15 days long.
  • General: Ethical rules prohibit baiting in some areas; focus on spot-and-stalk methods.

Always check current regs through our consultants to avoid issues.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
Stan Masneri

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
