The roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus) is the second-largest antelope in Africa, outsized only by the eland. A mature bull carries a thick, muscular frame, a bold black-and-white facial mask, and sweeping, backward-curved horns that can exceed 30 inches. Trophy hunters who have pursued the full range of African plains game almost universally rank roan among the most impressive animals they have ever taken — and one of the most satisfying to pursue.
Roan occupy a narrower range than many plains game species. They require specific savanna and woodland habitat with reliable water and relatively undisturbed grass cover, which limits where they are genuinely available on a hunting concession.
South Africa holds roan in the Limpopo and North West provinces, and select private conservancies manage sustainable populations specifically for trophy hunting. A South Africa plains game safari built around roan can also include a remarkable variety of other species, making it one of the most efficient multi-species hunts in the world. Some outfitters operating Cape Buffalo hunts in South Africa also manage roan in adjacent concessions, allowing hunters to combine both pursuits in a single trip.

Roan are not hunted at water alone. They are most effectively pursued by spot-and-stalk through their preferred savanna and open woodland habitat — glassing from elevated ground, then closing the distance carefully on foot. Bulls are often found with a herd of cows, and identifying a mature trophy male requires time behind glass and patience in the approach.
Shots are typically taken at moderate distances across open terrain. A roan bull is a large, heavily built animal and is well known for its tenacity — shot placement and caliber selection matter. Most professional hunters recommend a flat-shooting rifle in a medium to large bore, and clients who are comfortable shooting from shooting sticks at distances between 100 and 250 yards will be well prepared.
Roan hunting in both South Africa and Namibia follows the southern hemisphere calendar. The dry season — roughly May through October — is considered prime time. Reduced vegetation makes animals easier to locate, water sources concentrate game predictably, and cooler temperatures make for comfortable days on foot. Some outfitters offer hunting outside these peak months, though conditions differ. A consultant can help you weigh timing against your schedule and the specific concession's seasonal patterns.
Roan pair naturally with a broad plains game list. Hunters frequently combine them with sable, waterbuck, eland, kudu, and gemsbok on the same safari.
