Giant Forest Hog (Hylochoerus meinertzhageni) hunting targets the world's largest wild pig species, found primarily in the dense forests, woodlands, and forest-grassland mosaics of Central and East Africa. Known for their massive build (up to 600 lbs), coarse blackish hair, and distinctive facial glands, these animals are mainly nocturnal or crepuscular.
Hunting Giant Forest Hogs is considered very challenging due to their elusive nature, dense habitat, keen sense of smell, and potential aggression. Common hunting methods include:
- Stalking: Carefully approaching known feeding areas, waterholes, salt licks, or wallows, typically during low light conditions (dawn/dusk) and paying close attention to wind direction.
- Tracking: Employing experienced local trackers to follow signs through the thick forest.
- Ambush/Still Hunting: Waiting patiently near travel corridors or clearings, sometimes from a raised platform or blind ("machan").
Giant Forest Hogs are often hunted as a secondary species during safaris targeting other forest game like Bongo (in CAR/Cameroon) or Mountain Nyala (in Ethiopia). Countries where hunts are typically offered include Cameroon, Central African Republic (CAR), and Ethiopia, with very few animals taken annually. Hunting is regulated, requiring specific licenses and permits obtained through reputable outfitters operating in legal hunting concessions. Due to their size and toughness, medium to large caliber rifles (e.g., .375 H&H) are generally recommended. Successfully hunting this unique and wary animal is considered a significant achievement for experienced hunters.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.
This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.Oliver Fischer
