Elk Hunting in Unit 7

Unit 7 is famous for its robust elk population, especially during the rut season when the bulls are highly vocal and active. Hunters can take advantage of the distinct bugling sounds that fill the air, signaling prime opportunities to track these majestic animals. The terrain in this unit can be challenging, with thick cover and steep inclines, but those who are prepared can find themselves in the heart of elk country. Effective calling strategies, paired with scouting efforts, can significantly increase the chances of a successful hunt.

Mule Deer Hunting Opportunities

In addition to elk, Unit 7 also offers excellent hunting prospects for mule deer. The diverse habitat, which includes brushy areas and open plains, makes it a suitable environment for spotting these elusive creatures. Hunters should focus on known travel routes and feeding areas, particularly during the early mornings and late evenings when deer are most active.

Scouting and Planning

Thorough preparation and scouting are essential for a successful hunt in New Mexico Unit 7. Utilizing maps, such as BLM and US Forest Service maps, alongside modern tools like Google Earth, can help hunters identify key locations for spotting wildlife. Pre-season scouting can provide valuable insights into animal patterns, ensuring that hunters are well-equipped for their trips.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you, Stan Masneri
