New Mexico Unit 7

Overview

New Mexico Unit 7 is renowned for its exceptional hunting opportunities, particularly for elk and mule deer. Located in the scenic backdrop of the Gila National Forest, this unit offers a diverse landscape featuring rugged mountains, dense forests, and open meadows, providing an ideal habitat for a variety of wildlife. The elevation ranges from approximately 5,600 to 8,000 feet, offering hunters a dynamic environment to explore.

Elk Hunting in Unit 7

Unit 7 is famous for its robust elk population, especially during the rut season when the bulls are highly vocal and active. Hunters can take advantage of the distinct bugling sounds that fill the air, signaling prime opportunities to track these majestic animals. The terrain in this unit can be challenging, with thick cover and steep inclines, but those who are prepared can find themselves in the heart of elk country. Effective calling strategies, paired with scouting efforts, can significantly increase the chances of a successful hunt.

Mule Deer Hunting Opportunities

In addition to elk, Unit 7 also offers excellent hunting prospects for mule deer. The diverse habitat, which includes brushy areas and open plains, makes it a suitable environment for spotting these elusive creatures. Hunters should focus on known travel routes and feeding areas, particularly during the early mornings and late evenings when deer are most active.

Scouting and Planning

Thorough preparation and scouting are essential for a successful hunt in New Mexico Unit 7. Utilizing maps, such as BLM and US Forest Service maps, alongside modern tools like Google Earth, can help hunters identify key locations for spotting wildlife. Pre-season scouting can provide valuable insights into animal patterns, ensuring that hunters are well-equipped for their trips.

In summary, New Mexico Unit 7 offers a fantastic hunting experience filled with breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife. With its thriving elk and mule deer populations, this unit is a top destination for hunting enthusiasts looking for adventure. Our hunt was excellent.

We saw bucks every day along with all other sorts of wildlife. Mountain goats, bears, and foxes were common sights. Fishing and crabbing was special bonus. The food was excellent, the crew was amazing. Outdoors International did a great job of finding exactly what we were looking for.

What an amazing experience!

The hunting lodge was out of this world!, Rooms, food and the scenery were all A+. Our guide was exceptional and had us on Shiras moose all five days. We saw over 30 total with at least 10 bulls. They had a plan for everything including taxidermy and game processing.
