New Mexico Unit 10

Overview

New Mexico Unit 10 offers a challenging elk hunting experience with its dense landscapes dominated by ponderosa pine and juniper. This thick, rugged terrain makes hunting difficult if you're unfamiliar with the area or haven't scouted in the off-season. Unlike other units, Unit 10 lacks extensive glassing opportunities, so calling becomes a primary tactic, especially if you're targeting a trophy elk. A significant portion of this unit is within the Cibola National Forest, a vast 1.6 million-acre expanse, with elevations ranging from 5,000 to 11,301 feet. With 137,701 acres designated as wilderness, Cibola National Forest (pronounced SEE-bo-lah) offers some of the most remote hunting environments in the state.

Known for its bugling bulls, Unit 10 offers a memorable rut hunt that’s often talked about for years. However, be prepared to cover tough terrain, as every opportunity in this unit is hard-earned.

New Mexico Elk Hunting Seasons in Unit 10

The early elk muzzleloader season in New Mexico Unit 10 runs from October 10–14, providing hunters with a prime opportunity during the rut.

Scouting for Unit 10

Using a combination of resources is crucial when scouting. While general maps like BLM and U.S. Forest Service maps are essential, digital tools like Google Earth and mapping apps like OnyX will help pinpoint key hunting areas within Unit 10.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
Stan Masneri

What an amazing experience!

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
